Death Masks (Dresden Files)
The Dresden Files have taken the genre of paranormal mystery to a new level of action, excitement, and hard-hitting magical muscle. Now, in Death Masks, Jim Butcher's smart-guy private eye may have taken on more than he can handle... Harry Dresden, Chicago's only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But he also knows that whenever things are going good, the only way left for them to go is bad. Way bad. Such as: - A duel with the lethal champion of the Red Court, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards...
- Professional hit men using Harry for target practice...
- The missing Shroud of Turin--and the possible involvement of Chicago's most feared mob boss...
- A handless and headless corpse the Chicago police need identified... Not to mention the return of Harry's ex-girlfriend Susan, who's still struggling with her semi-vampiric nature. And who seems to have a new man in her life. Some days, it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. No matter how much you're charging.

Ugh. These books get better every installment. I really loved the idea of the Fellowship of St. Giles and the Archive. I hope she comes back sometime. I adore the idea of one of the knights of the cross being an atheist and (a repentant) one of the fallen. Ugh so good.
A bit of a double dip here as Butcher manages 2 pieces of the overall story arch in one book. That being said, I think he did a stellar job and once again shows how well planned out this series was ahead of time.
Absolutely loved the duel overseen by The Archive (great character concept) and Kincaid (boy this guy is awesome!) as well as a progression with the Blackened Denarians.
Butcher simply creates some impressive characters - each so well developed and interesting in their own way. This series is going to be amazing.
Great book, nice overarching story progression from threads left in previous books. If you're lucky enough to have audible, James Marsters is the best narrator I've ever heard in my entire life. :) Check him out!
