Darling Girls: A Novel

SISTERS, SECRETS, LOVE, AND MURDER... Sally Hepworth’s novel Darling Girls has it all.
For as long as they can remember, Jessica, Norah, and Alicia have been told how lucky they are. As young girls they were rescued from family tragedies and raised by a loving foster mother, Miss Fairchild, on an idyllic farming estate and given an elusive second chance at a happy family life.
But their childhood wasn’t the fairy tale everyone thinks it was. Miss Fairchild had rules. Miss Fairchild could be unpredictable. And Miss Fairchild was never, ever to be crossed. In a moment of desperation, the three broke away from Miss Fairchild and thought they were free. Even though they never saw her again, she was always somewhere in the shadows of their minds. When a body is discovered under the home they grew up in, the foster sisters find themselves thrust into the spotlight as key witnesses. Or are they prime suspects?

Readers say *Darling Girls* is a gripping psychological thriller about three foster sisters enduring abuse under a malevolent foster mother and the la...
Three girls, Norah, Alicia and Jessica are placed in the foster home of Miss Fairchild. All seems fine to the outside world, but behind closed doors it is a nightmare. They suffered together under the highly unpredictable, extremely strict, and often cruel and abusive Miss Fairchild. When small infants were placed in Miss Fairchild’s care, the girls would take care of them and try and keep Miss Fairchild happy so they were not abused. The three girls figured that they needed to stick together to get through this. They formed an unbreakable bond. Now as adults they’ve kept that bond alive, always vigilant for one another. They still wondered what happened to the infants that they had to leave behind once they “aged out” of foster care.
The women, Norah, Jessica and Alicia are contacted by police when bones are found buried under Miss Fairchild's former home. Miss Fairchild and the sisters return as requested by the police. Maybe they’ll find some answers of their own. Could this be one of the foster children that was there before them? After all they did find clothes and toys with “Amy” on them in the basement.
Sally Hepworth wrote such a gripping and suspenseful story with this one, that it will keep you guessing until the end. THE END!! Oh boy, it got me. I could have never guessed.
that leave lasting scars on all of them.
The 3 girls all came into Jessica's care at different times, but they lived together about 2-3 years. Jessica was the first child at age 5 to be in Jessica's care. She was so desperate for affection and love. Then came Norah, 11 years old and an aggressive, sometimes violent child. Alicia, the last girl to join the others while her grandmother was recovering from an accident, was sweet and funny. The 3 girls were about the same age, so they were in Jessica's care for different amounts of time. The girls all experienced Jessica's physical and mental abuse. Twenty-five years later, each girl receives a phone call from law enforcement about a mystery buried at their childhood house. As they return to the house, they are forced to confront their past and the terrible tragedies that occurred there.
Told in flashbacks and present day from all 3 POV's, we learn the background story for each girl. This added to the story by giving insight into each character. Each girl is well developed and has her own personality. The writing style was perfect. I wanted to keep reading. Even though it is serious subject matter, Hepworth does a good job sprinkling in humor throughout the story. I also liked the letters to the psychiatrist. They kept me guessing as to who the author was. I did not see the twist at the very end. I really liked this story. It was a fast, intriguing read with unique, well-developed characters, past and present.
