Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

From the author of The BFG and Matilda!

Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last! But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, Our Hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

A personal note for connoisseurs: Having read the book and seen all the film versions—from Mel Stuart's 1971 musical masterpiece with Gene Wilder to Tim Burton's colorful 2005 adaptation with Johnny Depp—I can say that the novel offers a unique experience that no film fully captures. The book leaves more room for imagination about the Factory and, above all, delves deeper into Charlie's poignant relationship with his poor but united family, an element the films tend to condense. The moral, delivered through Dahl's sharp and ruthless voice, is more cutting and ironic on the page than on the screen.

“I am the maker of music, the dreamer of dreams!”

Wonderful is the dream-like world that Roald Dahl has drawn up that the world of his is surpassed by only his imagination. The wonders and the adventures are as candid and flossed as the candies made by Mr Wonka in the wonderful chocolate factory of his. What a world he draws, this creativity is humbling and the world he draws up is one that can be watched in awe and utter dumbfoundness alone.

A beautiful story, that is as beautiful as the place it takes place in.
