Cannery Row: (Centennial Edition)

Steinbeck's tough yet charming portrait of people on the margins of society, dependant on one another for both physical and emotional survival

Unburdened by the material necessities of the more fortunate, the denizens of Cannery Row discover rewards unknown in more traditional society. Henry the painter sorts through junk lots for pieces of wood to incorporate into the boat he is building, while the girls from Dora Flood’s bordello venture out now and then to enjoy a bit of sunshine. Lee Chong stocks his grocery with almost anything a man could want, and Doc, a young marine biologist who ministers to sick puppies and unhappy souls, unexpectedly finds true love. Cannery Row is just a few blocks long, but the story it harbors is suffused with warmth, understanding, and a great fund of human values.

First published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is—both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. John Steinbeck draws on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, and interweaves their stories in this world where only the fittest survive—creating what is at once one of his most humorous and poignant works. In Cannery Row, John Steinbeck returns to the setting of Tortilla Flat to create another evocative portrait of life as it is lived by those who unabashedly put the highest value on the intangibles—human warmth, camaraderie, and love.

This Steinbeck Centennial Edition features French flaps and deckled pages.

Wonderful slice of life story set in Monterey, CA, during the Great Depression. Cannery Row is inhabited by "whores, pimps, gamblers and sons of bitches." Told in a series of interconnected vignettes, it focuses on Mack and his rowdy group of bum friends, who are planning to throw a party for Doc, their marine biologist friend, to thank him for all he does for them. Lee Chong, the local grocer, and Dora, who runs the local whorehouse, do their part to pitch in, as do other residents of the neighborhood. What seem like cliched characters at first gradually develop into more three-dimensional people, as we get just a glimpse into what might have brought them to Cannery Row. All flawed but sympathetic characters.

I loved this book. The characters were the most lovable "whores, pimps, gamblers and sons of bitches" I've ever had the pleasure of reading about.

I am going through a rediscovery of Steinbeck. Never managed to read Cannery Row before. So good and loaded with quotable quotes. Here are a couple of my favorite:

“They did not measure their joy in goods sold, their egos in bank balances, nor their loves in what they cost”.
“…where men hungering for love destroy everything lovable about them”.
“…for a starfish loves to hang onto something and for an hour these had found only each other.”
“No one has studied the psychology of a dying party. It may be raging, howling, boiling, and then a fever sets in and a little silence and then quickly quickly it is gone, the guests go home or go to sleep or wander away to some other affair and they leave a dead body.”
“Who wants to be good if he has to be hungry too?”
“And no one was invited. Everyone was going.”

I love this book ! The fantastic descriptions of the characters of Mac and the Boys, who mooch their days away drinking and indulging in women, and poor Doc, a scientist living in Cannery Row to study sea life, bring this book to life for me. I can’t tell you much more as there would be too many spoilers, but do what I did - read it now !
