The Pearl

"There it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon."

Like his father and grandfather before him, Kino is a poor diver, gathering pearls from the gulf beds that once brought great wealth to the Kings of Spain and now provide Kino, Juana, and their infant son with meager subsistence. Then, on a day like any other, Kino emerges from the sea with a pearl as large as a sea gull's egg, as "perfect as the moon." With the pearl comes hope, the promise of comfort and of security....

A story of classic simplicity, based on a Mexican folk tale, The Pearl explores the secrets of man's nature, the darkest depths of evil, and the luminous possibilities of love.

Fantastic. Everything about this book was amazing. Steinbeck has let me down only with book so far and it seems like it'll stay that way. It was so heartwarming to see two people who love and support each other the way the main character and his wife do in this story. The poverty, the sorrow and yet she still stood by him through it all. Nowadays we don't witness a lot of that, I could even say that I haven't at all. The trust she had in her man suprised me and I wish I could embody that for someone. To truly feel like you should atand by them no matter what they do, no matter what decisions they make or paths they take.
The pearl was a very interesting thing to happen to their family and like the wife said, it did ruin their family to a certain extend. If someone reads this review I want them to want to read the book so I won't spoil the story but the pearl and the storyline around it were the center of it all and really opened my eyes, gave me a new perspective. Sometimes we think we want something and when we get it, it turns out it would have been better to be happy with what we had at first. I loved a lot of other things but it would be best if you read it yourself.

I read this book in school, but I think it was another one of those books I wasn't ready to read as a kid. I think that I thought it was about "an evil pearl." The main thing I remembered was that the main character guy was a jerk, which isn't even true on a re-reading.

As an adult, I see the book about the pain and ubiquity of injustice and oppression. But oh man, this book is so painful.
