Black Widows

"While Quinn writes with spirit on weighty subjects like domestic abuse, polygamy and religious cults, her primary and most poignant theme seems to be female friendship."--New York Times Book Review

"An absolutely thrilling novel. I devoured it over a weekend, unable to put it down. It's a clever and completely original take on a domestic thriller."--Alex Michaelides, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Silent Patient

"Original, informative, suspenseful--the big three in a literary slam bang."--New York Journal of Books

Blake's dead. They say his wife killed him. If so... which one?

Polygamist Blake Nelson built a homestead on a hidden stretch of land--a raw paradise in the wilds of Utah--where he lived with his three wives:

Rachel, the first wife, obedient and doting to a fault, with a past she'd prefer to keep quiet.

Tina, the rebel wife, everything Rachel isn't, straight from rehab and the Vegas strip.

And Emily, the young wife, naïve and scared, estranged from her Catholic family.

The only thing that they had in common was Blake. Until all three are accused of his murder.

When Blake is found dead under the desert sun, all three wives become suspect--not only to the police, but to each other. As the investigation draws them closer, each wife must decide who can be trusted. With stories surfacing of a notorious cult tucked away in the hills, whispers flying about a fourth wife, and evidence that can't quite explain what had been keeping Blake busy, the three widows face a reckoning that might shatter all they know to be true.

For fans of The Wife Between Us and The Dry comes a chilling murder mystery that takes a domestic thriller's classic question--"Did his wife kill him?"--and twists it into an completely new type of suspense.

In Black Widows by Cate Quinn, Blake Nelson is found dead in the Utah desert—and the prime suspects are his three wives. Rachel, Emily, and Tina each have a reason to want him gone, but none of them is willing to take the fall. As the investigation unfolds, dark secrets, hidden resentments, and the cracks in their twisted marriage come to light. The question is: which wife snapped? After reading The Clinic by Cate Quinn and loving every second of it, I knew I had to check out more of her work—Black Widows was the one I picked next. And let me tell you... I had no clue what I was walking into. This book dives deep into Mormon fundamentalism and polygamy, and while that’s definitely not my usual subject matter, I actually found it fascinating. Cate Quinn manages to blend cultural insight with mystery in a way that’s both informative and chilling. She really has a knack for creating suspense while still giving you something meaningful to chew on. That said, this is 100% a slow-burn thriller. The suspense doesn’t really kick in until you’re about a third of the way through, so if you're someone who needs instant action and back-to-back twists, this might not be the book for you. You have to settle in and let it simmer. Also—108 chapters felt a little excessive. It’s manageable, but at times I found myself wondering when the big reveal would finally hit. Still, I enjoyed it. The story is unique, the setting is eerie, and the perspectives of the three wives kept things layered and emotionally complex. If you're into psychological dramas with cult vibes, complex female leads, and slow-building tension, this could definitely be your next read. I’m looking forward to seeing what Cate Quinn does next—her upcoming release in November is already on my radar.

Very suspenseful, didn't expect the suspect to be who it actually was. The Mormon aspect was a bit much, but thats just me. Don't know if I'd recommend but I definitely wouldn't read it again.
