Beauty and the Beast: Lost in a Book

By Jennifer Donnelly

Smart, bookish Belle, a captive in the Beast's castle, has become accustomed to her new home and has befriended its inhabitants. When she comes upon Nevermore, an enchanted book unlike anything else she has seen in the castle, Belle finds herself pulled into its pages and transported to a world of glamour and intrigue. The adventures Belle has always imagined, the dreams she was forced to give up when she became a prisoner, seem within reach again.
The charming and mysterious characters Belle meets within the pages of Nevermore offer her glamorous conversation, a life of dazzling Parisian luxury, and even a reunion she never thought possible. Here Belle can have everything she ever wished for. But what about her friends in the Beast's castle? Can Belle trust her new companions inside the pages of Nevermore? Is Nevermore's world even real? Belle must uncover the truth about the book, before she loses herself in it forever.

This book was basically written for the book-girlies. I mean, Belle gets trapped inside a book inside that giant library? I was sold on page one. I just sank right into it. It feels like a love letter to the original movie but with more magic, more heart, and a lot more Belle being Belle — curious, brave, stubborn in the best way. Donnelly gets her voice so right, and the Nevermore world she builds is the kind of eerie-beautiful place I wanted to linger in. No spoilers, but it’s got that perfect Disney warmth with a little shadow around the edges. It’s about stories and memory and what we choose to believe about the people we love, and it made me tear up in that quiet, happy way. I finished it feeling like I’d just spent an afternoon wandering the Beast’s library myself. If you grew up wanting to live in that library, or you just want a cozy, magical read that still has stakes, read this. It’s going straight to my forever shelf.

First off, I tried to overdose on Beauty and the Beast yesterday from seeing the film and promptly going to the bookstore to get a book to keep the magic going. (Totally worth it! I still want to be Belle and Emma Watson....)

This book is great. It's written nicely, and I only put it down only when I was riding in or driving a vehicle yesterday afternoon.

A fiction book was just what I needed to break up my current "Being Read" stack. This let me escape to the castle, interact with Ms. Potts and Chip, snicker with Lumiere, drink in Plumette's accent, and evade Cogsworth's war stories. I also cannot forget, watching Beast fall more in love with the stubborn and fearless Belle. What else could one ask for? *cue infomercial music* BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!! The whole point of this book, being a side story for the "Beauty and the Beast," is that there is this enchanted book that Belle finds that takes her to this magical place, Nevermore, all because of the rivalry of two sisters, Love and Death. Even when they think they can manipulate Belle's life, she is reminded that she writes her story. That she can change it any point, and she is a fighter. I think these are great take aways that align well with the newest film of being fearless, being kind and empathetic, and always dare for more when it comes to learning and educating oneself, regardless of what others say. For girls and boys today, I cannot think of better reminders.
