“Thrilling . . . heartbreaking . . . uplifting . . . the fast-paced, emotionally charged story of one ambitious young woman, finding both her voice and her passion.”—Kristin Hannah, author of The Women

“NASA? Space missions? The ’80s? This is a collection of all the things I love.”—Andy Weir, author of Project Hail Mary and The Martian

Joan Goodwin has been obsessed with the stars for as long as she can remember. Thoughtful and reserved, Joan is content with her life as a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University and as aunt to her precocious niece, Frances. That is, until she comes across an advertisement seeking the first women scientists to join NASA’s space shuttle program. Suddenly, Joan burns to be one of the few people to go to space.

Selected from a pool of thousands of applicants in the summer of 1980, Joan begins training at Houston’s Johnson Space Center, alongside an exceptional group of fellow candidates: Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond and scientist John Griffin, who are kind and easygoing even when the stakes are highest; mission specialist Lydia Danes, who has worked too hard to play nice; warmhearted Donna Fitzgerald, who is navigating her own secrets; and Vanessa Ford, the magnetic and mysterious aeronautical engineer, who can fix any engine and fly any plane.

As the new astronauts become unlikely friends and prepare for their first flights, Joan finds a passion and a love she never imagined. In this new light, Joan begins to question everything she thinks she knows about her place in the observable universe.

Then, in December of 1984, on mission STS-LR9, it all changes in an instant.

Fast-paced, thrilling, and emotional, Atmosphere is Taylor Jenkins Reid at her best: transporting readers to iconic times and places, creating complex protagonists, and telling a passionate and soaring story about the transformative power of love—this time among the stars.

‘Atmosphere’ is a compelling character-driven romantic story with an emotional ending. The dual timelines provide insights into Joan's journey as she joins NASA, showcasing the challenges women faced in a male-dominated field. Themes of family, belonging, and identity are intricately woven into the narrative. While the love story is central, it also highlights Joan's deep connections to her family and friends. The convergence of timelines at the end heightens the emotional stakes, especially in the last 300 pages. TJR's characters are complex, and the exploration of space and personal yearning adds depth. The extensive research behind the writing shines through, making this book a worthwhile read.

I had my doubts in the beginning but it grasped my attention almost immediately and I had to know how it ended. Ultimately, I am in tears.

Atmosphere explores the space boom of the 80s and how it was for females, especially two queer females, trying to get into space as they navigate their careers, families, friends, and love life. TJR is fantastic at research and creating characters in a setting that feels like reality. Any TJR character feels like a real person to me and she succeeded in doing that again in Atmoshpere! The characters were well crafted and felt like People you would actually meet. While I love the characters, this was a very romance heavy book and I was a little disappointed when the astronaut training space plot took a side role to the romance. The book is pretty well paced but in the middle it dragged on for me because it was more about Vanessa and Joan’s relationship and other personal dramas that seemed to be a little long in comparison to the space plot going on at the same time. Another area the pacing was a little off was the ending. The story felt so drawn out at points but then ended so abruptly I still had lots of questions. I see why it ended the way it did, it was very dramatic, but it was these overdramatic scenes that took me out of the story. While this one was a little too dramatic for my tastes (it’s very romance heavy) it was still a great book and I’d recommend to those that like historical romances or TJR. Carrie Soto is still my all time favorite by this author, but Atmosphere was also still worth a read!
