Artemis Fowl

The first book in Eoin Colfer's internationally bestselling series about a criminal mastermind and his siege against dangerous, tech-savvy fairies.

"The world that Colfer creates is as vivid and fantastical as any shire, gotham, or galaxy far, far away in recent memory."
―Entertainment Weekly

Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is a millionaire, a genius, and—above all—a criminal mastermind. But even Artemis doesn't know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit. These aren't the fairies of bedtime stories; these fairies are armed and dangerous.

Artemis thinks he has them right where he wants them...but then they stop playing by the rules.

I read this book with my student book club and they loved it. In my opinion, Artemis seems like an arrogant little boy that sadly doesn’t have parental guidance. He’s left to his own the devices and this causes him to think he can do anything he wants. He met his match in Holly, the fairy LEP agent. He might have won this first round, but I think he’ll get what he deserves as the series continues.

It was so fun to listen to this story. The Audible version narrated by Nathaniel Parker is fantastic. I have fond memories of this series as it was one that my son loved as a kid. We'd anxiously await the release of each volume. The books were unique and clever not only in story but in format as well. The bottom of every page contains a coded message to be deciphered and he devotedly figured out every one of them. Over the years he has misplaced and lost some of the volumes, so for his birthday this year I was able to find and purchase the original editions of Volumes 1-5 for him. He's in his 30's now and we were both as thrilled to have these books today as we were when they first came out!

James (6th grade) and I read this together. He liked it more than I did. We were both charmed that the characters were all Irish and the main boy character was morally complicated. Unfortunately, the writing made it confusing at times.
