(3.5) The beginning was really strong. It had a mysterious allure draped in beautiful prose, academic rivalry, and secrets. When the secrets started to be unveiled was when the book lost some of its appeal. It became less academic at the expense of being more fantastical. Instead of actual recitations or library visits, we were just told about them instead of shown, in favor of developing the vampiric plot. There were times I worried the prose was teetering on the line between being pseudo-intellectual and actually insightful, but overall, Gibson did a good job of maintaining substance behind the flowery language.
4.5 stars, read it it’s a great story
Read as a follow up to A Dowry of Blood. Certainly not as strong as the other, but still enjoyable. Found lesbian vampire family. It did drag on a bit, but admittedly I mostly listened to an audiobook which is abnormal for me.
In full honesty I just wish the professor hadn't been a presence! I was far more rapt by Laura and Carmilla's story than anything to do with the professor.
