Written from the point of view of the bride of Dracula, it is a deadly love letter depicting what eternity with the prince of the night was like. It is a glimpse of hardship and woe mixed with the heavy and convoluted darkness of being a vampire and how loving a centuries old creature is like. While it is a short read it is a powerful read. Showing what abuse, isolation, and narcissism wrapped under the guise of toxic love can do to the mental state of a person and how far they are willing to go to escape such tragedy. Very well written. Giving the emotions one would feel in such a relationship. Truly a must read.

Desire makes idiots of all of us. But you already knew that part, didn't you?

Sold as a reimagining of Dracula's brides this book follows Constanta, the first bride to be created, and her relationship with Dracula through the years and the creation of the other brides. This seemed like something I would love, so this rating is quite a surprise to me too.

My main issue with this was that not a lot happened. Yes, the plot moved along but it was a lot of telling instead of showing. Scenes lacked details, the characters weren't fleshed out enough and the narration got a bit annoying at times. There were a lot of off handed mentions to events that I would have liked to see fleshed out. What about their meeting with the Harkers? Or Dracula's dealings with revolutionaries in Russia? Mostly I think I didn't care much for the narrator. Constanta was very static and even boring, I just couldn't connect with her.

I will say that I liked the way the relationships between Dracula and the brides were portrayed. You could clearly see the cycle of abuse and how he manipulated all of them in subtle ways. However it just didn't work as a retelling of the brides because it lacked vampires. It sounds odd but I feel like the same tale could have been told without them being creatures of the night.
