Always Never Yours

"Every page bursts with humor, squee-inducing romance, and an abiding sense of the deep love and joy of its two writers . . .  Always Never Yours is a necessary, feel-good addition to the YA canon.”—Entertainment Weekly

Megan Harper is the girl before. All her exes find their one true love right after dating her. It's not a curse or anything, it's just the way things are. and Megan refuses to waste time feeling sorry for herself. Instead, she focuses on pursuing her next fling, directing theater, and fulfilling her dream school's acting requirement in the smallest role possible. But her plans quickly crumble when she's cast as none other than Juliet--yes, that Juliet--in her high school's production. It's a nightmare. Megan's not an actress and she's certainly not a Juliet. Then she meets Owen Okita, an aspiring playwright who agrees to help Megan catch the eye of a sexy stagehand in exchange for help writing his new script. Between rehearsals and contending with her divided family, Megan begins to notice Owen--thoughtful, unconventional, and utterly unlike her exes, and wonders: shouldn't a girl get to star in her own love story?

I stopped reading at 47%. At first I thought it was... kind of addictive? But the more I read it, the more I feel averse to reading it.

Megan is so intensely flirtatious. She embraces her sexuality, which I think it's refreshing in a way, but she can come on a bit too hard that it makes me uncomfortable, especially for someone her age. Let's not forget that she even flirts with someone who is unavailable. No one good will do that. She said so herself, and yet, why did it happen with her? I really like Owen though, and would have liked him more if he didn't actually flirt back with Megan. It felt as if he's forgotten his girlfriend. The authors shouldn't portray long-distance relationships in a way that suggests they are doomed to fail, because they are not.

There is also full-on gay romance which I'm not used to. I can take it if they are being subtle, like all the other books I've read (including Six of Crows). This one, however, is on a whole new level. Honestly, I actually stopped because I read the part where they made out. On the bed. When they've only JUST gotten together. And they were willing to do it even though they knew Megan and Owen were outside the room? That was the last straw.

Basically, this book touches on a lot of things that I am not 100% comfortable with, and that's sad, because it ruined my experience as a reader. I regret ever picking it up. As a YA novel, I would have expected something more enjoyable to read. I was pulled in by the blurb. It did have potential, but... well, all I can say is that I got tricked, and I was unlucky enough to read a book that doesn't suit my taste.

This book was so adorable! I'm so glad it got an audio so that I could read it sooner than I was anticipating!
