The Roughest Draft

Three years ago, Katrina Freeling and Nathan Van Huysen were the brightest literary stars on the horizon, their cowritten book topping bestseller lists. But on the heels of their greatest success, they ended their partnership on bad terms, for reasons neither would divulge to the public. They haven't spoken since, and never planned to, except they have one final book due on contract. Facing crossroads in their personal and professional lives, they're forced to reunite. The last thing they ever thought they'd do again is hole up in the tiny Florida town where they wrote their previous book, trying to finish a new manuscript quickly and painlessly. Working through the reasons they've hated each other for the past three years isn't easy, especially not while writing a romantic novel. While passion and prose push them closer together in the Florida heat, Katrina and Nathan will learn that relationships, like writing, sometimes take a few rough drafts before they get it right.

So, unlike many of the middling reviews here, I didn’t expect this to be the hottest summer romance I’d ever read. I wasn’t expecting Nathan to smut it up everywhere and I wasn’t looking for a meet cute. I had the expectation of a lit-fic heavy women’s lit romance and this fit that. What was missing for me, however, was that everyone talks about the angst in this book and I don’t get there. Too many side relationships with Chris and Harriet and Liz to feel like a true romance. While this was also largely well written, there was a lot of unrealistic language/behavior that took me out of the story.
Without spoilers, the haste at which relationships end in this book without a care so matter of fact-ish was too much for me.

this HAS to be read every summer from now on.. emily & austin’s writing together in this book was ✨beautiful✨ & took my on emotional rollercoaster after emotional rollercoaster. SO many good quotes, SO many good lessons!! the FMC was very jumpy with her feelings - one page would be her feeling one way & then the next page would be the complete opposite. the transition between those two feelings was kind of bare, but also… super realistic? the only other thing was my LEAST favorite trope in the entire world - MISCOMMUNICATION.. but this book was so good that it was only knocked down .25 ⭐️ after these minor flaws.
amazing dual-POV! kept me locked in, but ending was kind of predictable. beautiful beautiful lyrical writing by these two!

The moment Chris, a douchebag agent said to his fiancée "I'm your fiancé. Do my feelings mean nothing?" That was my cue to delete this ebook from my library.
If you're a true man and a good human being you'd never use that as an excuse to gaslight your partner into doing something she doesn't want to. I mean grow a pair.
I heard good reviews about this book but yeah this ain't for me. And please don't compare this to Beach Read, I know I don't exactly vibe with EH's books but this isn't even close.
