All Things Wise and Wonderful (All Creatures Great and Small)

Musing on past adventures through the dales, visiting with old friends, and introducing scores of new and amusing characters--animal and human alike--Herriot enthralls with his uncanny ability to spin a most engaging and heartfelt yarn. Millions of readers have delighted in the wonderful storytelling and everyday miracles of James Herriot in the over thirty years since his delightful animal stories were first introduced to the world.BUY THE BOOK

All Creatures Great and Small had always been on my list of books I wanted to read someday....which is why I started with All Things Wise and Wonderful, the third book in the series. Whoops! Then I saw it includes the author's wartime experiences. Oh, no, I thought. NOT a fan of war, war stories, war anything.
No worries, I soon discovered.
If you don't know already, "James Herriot" is the pen name of a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales (don't you just love the sound of that alone?), and he doles out hearty bites of this life in small autobiographical vignettes seasoned with lovely and sometimes hilarious characters from Darrowby, where he lives and works. You come to know and love all of them, people and animals alike.
His time in the RAF mostly serves as just a backdrop to his reminiscences of life back home and the animals he's treated and the lessons he's learned about animals and humans along the way. There were a few times I forgot where I was and literally LOL'd while reading a couple stories. Ah, who cares - it's only the subway. People will pretend not to see/hear you anyway.
Herriot is a gentle, kind soul, and you'll want to stay in his company for hours and hours. I did not want this book to end! Oh, yeah - I can go back and start the series from the beginning now, can't I? :-)
