1975 is a time of change in America. The Vietnam War is ending. Muhammad Ali is fighting Joe Frazier. And in the smalltown of Monta Clare, Missouri, girls are disappearing.

When the daughter of a wealthy family is targeted, the most unlikely hero emerges—Patch, a local boy, who saves the girl, and, in doing so, leaves heartache in his wake.

Patch and those who love him soon discover that the line between triumph and tragedy has never been finer. And that their search for answers will lead them to truths that could mean losing one another.

A missing person mystery, a serial killer thriller, a love story, a unique twist on each, Chris Whitaker has written a novel about what lurks in the shadows of obsession and the blinding light of hope.

I read We Begin at the End in 2020 and loved it. It was one of my top reads for 2020. All the Colors of the Dark is another fantastic read. The way that Whitaker can make you care for his characters is phenomenal. I am going to do a very brief review on this amazing book, only to let you experience it.

Set in the span from 1975 to 2001. It is set in the town of Monta Clare, Missouri. Girls from this area have been disappearing. All the Colors of the Dark is told from a dual narrative. We hear from thirteen-year-old Patch, the pirate who saves a wealthy classmate from a serial killer and goes missing instead, and his best friend Saint, the beekeeper. The morning that she lost her bees, The one-eyed pirate Patch is kidnapped. Saint can’t believe Patch would just give up and die, so she tries with everything to find him.

Over the next 25 years, we watch as America goes through changing times, and the effect that has on the people in Monta Clare. This is not only a thriller/mystery, but of a wonderful coming of age story. It kept me enthralled until the last sentence. Oh and that sentence…wow.

The mystery was great, but the coming of age and family/relationship saga was the main feature. Really beautiful storytelling. Heartbreaking, but beautiful.
