Very engaging from the beginning, but lagged somewhat in the middle. I had a heart for all characters involved and hurt for them as they hurt. Even though it’s a long book, it was a fast read with short chapters. I was always waiting to see what would happen next.
What I liked: An epic coming of age story including small town life, police thriller, prison drama, and road trip adventures. The author’s prior work “We Begin at the End” is one of my all time favorites, and this new book met all expectations. What I disliked: The author shoehorned so much into the plot. At over 600 pages, it could have been two or three books.
The best 592 pages of my life. Wow! I had to get the audio version to help me get through it, as the tears would flow or I tried to catch my breath while continuing to read. Not one moment could I say “Oh I saw that coming”. I was kept at the edge of my seat while reading. I felt like I was there, I knew and felt each character. Truly amazing and captivating. This book will forever stay with me. Thank you Chris Whitaker.
