A charming, bookish little companion to Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore—this slim prequel doesn’t try to match the magic and scope of the original novel, nor should it. Instead, it offers us a quiet glimpse into the origin story of the enigmatic Mr. Penumbra himself, set in a San Francisco humming with the stirrings of the digital age.
There’s something satisfying about seeing Penumbra as a young man—curious, driven, already orbiting the gravitational pull of rare books and hidden knowledge. The tone is light, the mystery modest, but for those of us who fell in love with the world Robin Sloan created, this feels like visiting an old friend in his youth. No big revelations, no dramatic twists—just a flicker of backstory and a fond little echo of what’s to come.
Not essential reading, but definitely enjoyable—like finding a tucked-away short story in the back of a beloved hardcover. I wouldn't want a full sequel to Penumbra, and this novella makes me glad Sloan didn’t try to write one. Sometimes, the story is stronger for what it leaves unsaid.
