A Stranger in the House: A Novel
A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Another thrilling domestic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door and Not a Happy Family
"A Stranger in the House will have you sleeping with the lights on for weeks." --Bustle "Smart and suspenseful . . . you'll never see the ending coming." --PureWow
In this neighborhood, danger lies close to home.
Karen and Tom Krupp are happy--they've got a lovely home in upstate New York, they're practically newlyweds, and they have no kids to interrupt their comfortable life together. But one day, Tom returns home to find Karen has vanished--her car's gone and it seems she left in a rush. She even left her purse--complete with phone and ID--behind. There's a knock on the door--the police are there to take Tom to the hospital where his wife has been admitted. She had a car accident, and lost control as she sped through the worst part of town. The accident has left Karen with a concussion and a few scrapes. Still, she's mostly okay--except that she can't remember what she was doing or where she was when she crashed. The cops think her memory loss is highly convenient, and they suspect she was up to no good. Karen returns home with Tom, determined to heal and move on with her life. Then she realizes something's been moved. Something's not quite right. Someone's been in her house. And the police won't stop asking questions. Because in this house, everyone's a stranger. Everyone has something they'd rather keep hidden. Something they might even kill to keep quiet.

First one from this author I’ve actually really enjoyed. Great psych thriller with twists to the end. 10/10
Finally the first decent book I’ve read this year! Well Lucy Clarke’s was ok but this was cracking! Great ending which I always think is difficult in a thriller! Often endings ruin what was otherwise a fabulous book! This one however was amazing! Shari is deffo one of my fav authors at present! Five stars for being able to keep me turning them pages and sat here until 0400am two nights in a row just to finish jt! Can’t praise the plot enough! Just fabulous!
What did I think about this?
There is a review snippet on the back of the book:
Good luck sleeping tonight.
I slept just fine. In fact, I almost forgot that I even finished the book. I want to be very clear that there is absolutely nothing in this book that would truly make anyone other than the weakest of the weak have trouble sleeping.
Having said that, this started off interesting enough with only a few eyerolls (oh, she has amnesia and can't remember what happened...how convenient). There were a couple fun twists. Nothing rocking my world but enough to keep me reading. Mostly you could divide your list of suspects into two categories: whackadoo nutjobs and wimps that make Bambi look fierce. But I was ok with it because all I was looking for at this point was a fun, quick read.
And then it just gets messy and dumb and repetitive and the characters started to annoy me and even I had a theory or two about the ending. I say "even I" because I rarely go all detective and try to guess the endings in these types of books - I just enjoy the ride.
The ending was kinda cool and a little dark.
I'm being generous.
