This book flirts the line between a magical soul mate love story and a deep tingling erotica. I did enjoy the book overall as it gave me a black culture - Hallmark - read (but better). It starts by introducing a young female moving to NYC to open a flower shop (full of comedic puns) and prove her family wrong that she isn't the odd ball, quick to fail, mess up. She quickly befriends a celebrity sidekick, a wise guiding elderly neighbour, and a mysterious drawing stranger love interest. I found myself enchanted at times to the mystery of the connection between Ricki and Ezra and then curious if I'm reading a romance fantasy Fabio book. I think it definitely checked the box for a February Valentine's and Black History Month read.

This magical love story had some really great parts. Mainly that the supporting characters are way more interesting than the cosmically destined lovers. Ricki is lovable and eclectic. She set out to make a life for herself that she can be proud of, and she does just that. Her love interests, whose name is a spoiler, are self-deprecating in an endearing way and physically gorgeous. The fantastical twist that led to a deadly curse wasn't on pace with the rest of the story. The ending was a bit too predictable. Majorly, funny moments. Great literary flare. Ultimately a swing and a miss for me because of the realism mixed with magic mixed with historical fiction. It was doing many things but not quite mastering any one of them. 6/10
