A History of Glitter and Blood will go down as the oddest book I have read in a long time. Maybe ever. Yet -- I will always remember it.
I want to start off by stating that this book is not for everyone. I will admit -- there were several times I almost DNF (3, to be exact) yet something nagged at me to trudge through it. The story is odd, the characters unique. The writing, while different and jarring; is beautiful.
One thing that I LOVED about A History of Glitter in Blood is the narration. It takes UNRELIABLE narrator to another level and while yes, it's confusing as all get out, once you get into the flow of things, it's actually brilliant. I also loved the artwork and notes that were in the book. The formatting was difficult to follow at times but I got use to it.
Another thing I loved? The interesting world and meaning of IMMORTALITY. To feel a part of you that is no longer CONNECTED to your body is an odd and creepy thought. To know that, you wont ever "die," but rather, feel everything even when your body is scattered around. I mean, Beckan carried her father around in a JAR. Parts of him, anyway.
That aside -- the whole novel is thought-provoking. There are elements of the story that you don't see much in YA -- and is great for debate. I loved how close and intimate each relationship was. I loved how all the characters formed their own family, growing as the novel progressed.
All in all - I really liked A History of Glitter and Blood. While it took some time for me to get into and my debates to DNF were there -- I'm glad I finished. It's such a unique book, one I recommend if you are looking for something different!
