The General's Wife

By Suzanne Dana

The General's Wife is a compelling novel of secrets, loyalty, and redemption set against the demanding world of the military life.

Margaret Stone appears to be the perfect military spouse—supportive, resilient, and respected as the wife of Brigadier General George "Rocky" Stone. But beneath her carefully composed exterior lies a past shadowed by tragedy and one fateful night that could destroy everything she's built.

When a blackmail letter signed "Swimbuddy1980" arrives, Margaret is forced to confront the truth about what really happened during a late-night swim at Coronado Beach nearly thirty years ago. As the threats escalate and her husband faces a career-defining deployment to Afghanistan, Margaret must navigate the complex loyalties of military life while fighting to protect the life she's crafted from the ashes of her troubled youth.

From a San Diego tattoo parlor to the formality of Marine Corps ceremonies, Margaret's journey reveals the resilience of the human spirit and the unique bonds forged through shared sacrifice in the military community.

In this compelling narrative of love, betrayal, and redemption, one woman discovers that while the past shapes us, it need not define us—and that true strength comes from facing the most painful truths of all.

Hello Book Club Readers!

First off, thank you for choosing The General’s Wife for your group. I’m genuinely honored. There’s nothing I love more than imagining groups of readers gathered together (wine optional, but recommended), debating Maggie’s choices and whether they’d do things differently.

This novel was written to spark exactly those kinds of conversations – the messy, complicated, “but what would YOU do?” discussions that make book clubs so much fun.

A few things that make The General’s Wife perfect for book clubs:

· A mystery that slowly unravels (everyone will have theories)

· Moral ambiguity (there are no easy answers here)

· A protagonist who’s both sympathetic and flawed

· Themes that touch on marriage, identity, redemption, and what we owe each other

· Settings that span decades and continents

· Enough twists to keep things interesting, but enough character depth to really dig in

So grab your favorite beverage, settle in with your book club friends, and dive into these discussion questions. I promise they’ll get the conversation flowing!

Book club questions for The General's Wife by Suzanne Dana

Use these discussion questions to guide your next book club meeting.

About Margaret (Maggie)
At the beginning of the novel, Maggie has “perfected the role of military spouse.” What do you think this means? Is there a difference between perfecting a role and being authentic? Have you ever felt pressure to perform a role in your own life?

How did your feelings about Maggie change throughout the novel? Were there moments when you sympathized with her? Moments when you judged her. What made the difference?

If you were Maggie’s friend and she confided in you about what happened at Coronado Beach, what would you have advised her to do? Would your advice differ depending on when she told you (1980 vs. 2012)?

About Marriage and Partnership
Maggie and George’s marriage is tested throughout the novel. Do you think their relationship is ultimately strong or fragile? What makes a marriage strong enough to withstand devastating secrets?

The novel explores what it means to be “the general’s wife” – an identity defined by relationship to someone else. How does Maggie navigate her own identity within this role? Have you ever struggled with an identity tied to someone else (mother, wife, daughter, or employee)?

Do you think Maggie and George truly know each other? Can you have an intimate marriage while keeping significant secrets? Where’s the line between privacy and deception?

About Secrets and Consequences
The blackmail letter arrives nearly thirty years after the incident at Coronado Beach. Why do you think the timing matters? Would the story be different if the letter arrived after five years? Ten? Twenty?

The novel takes place in the tight-knit military community where “everyone knows everyone.” How does this setting raise the stakes? Have you ever lived in a close community where privacy felt impossible?

If you received a blackmail letter threatening to expose something from your past, what would you do? Would you pay? Confess? Ignore it? Fight back?

About the Mystery
When did you figure out what happened at Coronado Beach? Were you surprised by the revelation, or had you pieced it together? What clues lead you to the truth?

Who did you think sent the blackmail letter? Did the identity of the blackmailer surprise you? Looking back, were there clues you missed?

About the Settings
The novel takes readers from Coronado Beach, California, to Okinawa, Japan, to Cherry Point, North Carolina. Which setting resonated most with you? How did the different locations reflect Maggie’s internal journey?

Coronado Beach is described as almost idyllic – beautiful, romantic, perfect. How does this contrast with what happens there? Why do you think the author chose such a lovely setting for such a dark moment?

About Choices and Morality
Is there a statute of limitations on truth? Does Maggie owe honesty to George and others in her life, even after so many years? When, if ever, does protecting yourself become more important than telling the truth?

Several characters in the novel make morally complex choices. Who did you find most sympathetic? Least? Why?

About Gender and Power
The novel is set primarily in the male-dominated world of the military. How does Maggie navigate this environment? What compromises does she make? What power does she claim?

How might this story be different if George were the one with the secret and Margaret were the high-ranking military officer? Would the dynamic change?

About the Ending
The novel explores themes of forgiveness – both forgiving others and forgiving yourself. Who in the story finds forgiveness? Who doesn’t? Do you think Maggie forgives herself by the end?

If there were a sequel, what would you want to see happen to Maggie next?

If The General’s Wife became a movie, who would you cast as Maggie? George? The other key characters?
