Lost and Found

Trudy Yoder shares a passion for birding with Micah Weaver—and she has an even greater passion for Micah. Their friendship is finally turning romantic when Micah abruptly grows cold. Worse still, he wants to leave Stoney Ridge.

Micah thought he was over Trudy’s older sister, Shelley, who shattered his heart by running away to Nashville to pursue a singing career. Then out of the blue, she started leaving alarming messages for him.

So when the bishop asks for volunteers to scout a potential church relocation in Tennessee, Micah jumps at the opportunity. Despite scant details, he’s confident he can find Shelley. After all, his reputation as a field guide is based on finding birds that don’t want to be found.

But what he discovers in Tennessee is far from what he expects.

Book club questions for Lost and Found by Suzanne Woods Fisher

Use these discussion questions to guide your next book club meeting.

There are a few different themes in this novel: Micah’s realization that things aren’t always as they seemed, Billy Blank’s ability to accept people just as they are, David’s conviction that, in his desperate attempt to keep unity among church members, he asked for everyone’s opinion but the Lord’s. Was there a theme that resonated most with you? Which one and why?

Early on, readers learn that Micah Weaver viewed Trudy Yoder as an LBJ (Little Brown Job), a sparrow. Being described as a plain, common bird wouldn’t appeal to most women, but it didn’t seem to bother Trudy. In fact, she seemed delighted. Why do you think she took it as a compliment?

The plot of Lost and Found revolves around seeking. The Amish church of Stoney Ridge wanted to find a place to thrive. Micah Weaver was looking for Shelley Yoder. The little hawk chick was seeking security in the eagle’s nest. In what ways were they all misguided?

What were some of the lessons Micah learned when he realized Shelley Yoder wasn’t the girl he thought she was? Or the girl he wanted her to be?

Did you feel any sympathy for Shelley? Did you like her at all? How did you feel about the direction things seemed to be going with Billy Blank?

Trudy Yoder found great delight in birds. Variety, appearance, behaviors, instincts, and choices. Symbolism, too. What are your thoughts about the Christian tradition of giving such meaning to birds?
