In Judgement of Others

In this darkly comic tale of psychosis in the Home Counties, the stage is set for a blistering examination of mental illness, how we treat it and why we don’t. While Tessa is sectioned in a secure psychiatric hospital, the relationships in the community unravel, and by the time she’s released, all that we thought we knew, and all of our judgements, are thrown into question.

In Ros, the author uses the “unreliable witness” device to intentionally lull the reader into trusting her, just as Clare does. How did you feel about her when the truth of Ros was revealed? And how do you feel about authors using this technique to intentionally mislead the reader?

The subject of psychosis is intense and upsetting. Were you able to relate to Tessa, and did you feel it touched experiences in your own life?

Throughout the book, which characters did you feel most comfortable with, and who did you dislike? Who would you be friends with if you lived in the Midhurst of the novel, and who would you avoid?

How did you feel about the scenes which took place in Mercury Ward? Did they feel authentic?

What did you want for Tessa, and was the outcome satisfying to you as a reader?

The book is a "dark satire”. Did you find any of the comedic elements funny, or was the whole too dark to be humorous?

In your own life, can you relate to the material competitiveness of this small town society?

Has the novel encouraged you to reflect on the different ways we treat mental illness?

Has the novel shed light on addiction, in terms of the everyday addictions in the novel, the characters' extensive use of alcohol, casual use of drugs and nod to eating disorders?

Would you recommend this book to a friend?
