So, hunting’s a big deal in this story, right? We’ve got Wade Schmidt’s prowl for a grizzly bear, Oliver’s chase of Kate, and even Kate’s pursuit of the perfect bear shot. How do you think all these hunts tie together?
What about the surprise elements in the story? Did a few twists and turns catch you off guard? Was there a moment that had you do a double take?
Let’s get into the nitty-gritty of the characters’ development. Who do you think had the most growth by the end of the novel? Was there a character who really surprised you with their choices?
Coop’s introspection about his past mistakes with Emma and the parallels he sees in Oliver offer some food for thought. How does this self-awareness indicate that he’s finally ready to move on from Emma and have a successful new relationship?
And speaking of Kate, it was a bold move when she rejected Oliver’s proposal, even before the full truth comes to light. Did you think that moment marked a crucial point when she found her own voice? Or do you think it was inevitable?
Did you see any similarities between Wade Schmidt and Oliver? Or did they strike you as completely different characters? After you finished the book, did you go back and notice a few things that you might have missed the first time? Like that moment when Wade was thinking about his girlfriend and whether she’d fit into his life. Maybe she would work for him, he thought. Maybe not. Any other catches?
Tim and Sally are quite the pair, aren’t they? Super passionate about their work, but it’s like they’re dancing to different tunes. What do you think—will they figure out a way to sync up, or has that little gap between them turned into a canyon too big to cross?
And then there’s Frankie and Maisie. Do you think Maisie’s feelings are entirely one-sided? What’s your take on how the relationship between them might develop over time? Any moments that made you cheer or want to give one of them a gentle nudge in the right direction?
And then there’s the majestic national park setting, almost a character in its own right. The wild, untamed landscapes they find themselves in seem to parallel their own journeys toward authenticity and maturity. Maybe even understanding God in a bigger, wider way. How does this backdrop reflect or contrast with the characters’ struggles and growth?
