You, Again: A Novel (Dial Delights)

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “This gender-swapped When Harry Met Sally retelling is for anyone who craves romance novels with realistic and flawed characters. Ari and Josh circle each other for years in the kind of delicious, slow-burn tension that only comes from a well-executed enemies-to-friends-to-lovers arc.”—NPR
“Fresh, witty, and utterly romantic.”—Ali Hazelwood, author of The Love Hypothesis
A NPR AND GLAMOUR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR
Can they stop hating each other long enough to fall in love?
When Ari and Josh first meet, the wrong kind of sparks fly. They hate each other. Instantly.
A free-spirited, struggling comedian who likes to keep things casual, Ari sublets, takes gigs, and she never sleeps over after hooking up. Born-and-bred Manhattanite Josh has ambitious plans: Take the culinary world by storm, find The One, and make her breakfast in his spotless kitchen. They have absolutely nothing in common . . . except that they happen to be sleeping with the same woman.
Ari and Josh never expect their paths to cross again. But years later, as they’re both reeling from ego-bruising breakups, a chance encounter leads to a surprising connection: friendship. Turns out, spending time with your former nemesis is fun when you’re too sad to hate each other—and too sad for hate sex.
As friends-without-benefits, they find comfort in late-night Netflix binges, swiping through each other’s online dating profiles, and bickering across boroughs. It’s better than romance. Until one night, the unspoken boundaries of their platonic relationship begin to blur. . . .
With sharp observations and sizzling chemistry, You, Again explores the dynamics of co-ed friendship in this sparkling romantic comedy of modern love in all its forms.

When Harry Met Sally is my all-time favorite movie, and like many people's all-time favorites, it has become sacred to me. I hate when people review books or movies and call it "This generation's [insert Nora Ephron movie here]" because I don't want a modern version. To me, the magic of the Nora Ephron/Meg Ryan rom coms is the fact that they are so rooted in their times. The way these movies romanticize the culture of the pre-Internet and early-internet world makes me nostalgic for times I never experienced. Forgive me for not wanting to put on rose-colored glasses when reading modern adaptations full of dating apps and social media.
So believe me when I tell you that I was skeptical of this book. Were many of the plot points just hollow echoes of scenes from the movie? Sure. Did I like the characters? Not really. Did I have a hard time putting it down because I wanted to know how it ended, or was I just chasing the hope that it would end up being a better book than it turned out to be? Who's to say. But there's just something about two deeply-flawed characters finding each other that serves as a reminder that maybe there's hope for us all.

If you like the movie When Harry Met Sally, this is basically a modernized and expanded book version with more sex jokes. I was in the mood for an autumn slow-burn romance in New York, and this hit the spot, really. It was neat to see how the characters' relationships and views changed as time and events went by, and their mistakes were understandable, if painful to read at times. I did get a little tired of the reliance on sex jokes for humor, but I think that's my biggest critique. I listened to this on audiobook and would recommend it, I really like this narrator.
A really well written romance novel that feels modern. Ari and Josh meet several times over 8 years - both in different places each time. Characters are well defined. Plot is actually interesting.
