Wuthering Heights (Wordsworth Classics)

Introduction and Notes by John S. Whitley, University of Sussex.

Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine's father. After Mr Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine's brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries.

The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

Honestly, the book was incredibly hard to not only read but retain. Old school literature is definitely not my thing when it comes to what I enjoy reading. However, the movie was pretty good. From my understanding they did leave a lot of details out and changed it slightly. I did enjoy it though.

This was probably one of the most boring books I’ve ever read in my entire life. I had to skim a lot of it to finish. I recognize it’s a classic, and considered one of the best books ever written, but at the end of the day, art is art and will always be subjective. This was not for me.

With the new movie adaptation being released this year I wanted to finally pick this one up and see what would make it “the greatest love story of all time” and I was not very impressed. I could see where a story like this makes for a good screen adaptation but reading it just didn’t impress me. In my opinion, a lot of classic novels just don’t stand up in modern day and although they might be good works of literature, I just don’t think they’re fun. In this case, I wasn’t rooting for the characters, I didn’t enjoy the narration, it took me a long time to understand what was going on and in the end I didn’t care what happened. I’m glad to say I’ve read it and I would be curious to see the movie but I don’t think this is a “must read” for people.

I don't know how to review this book. It is, in fact, my favorite book now. It has surpassed the writings of all other authors. What I want to say about it will take the form of a dissertation and not a review.

But, for now, I leave with the knowledge that this book has won me over heart and soul...there is no other piece of literature like it.

Wow, what a classic indeed.
Things I wish I'd known before reading:
- this is not a romance, it's a damn tragedy
- the narrator is some random dude that has nothing to do with anything
- it frequently switches timeframes (sometimes without warning) and can turn from a retelling to a retelling of a retelling so that gets a bit confusing trying to parse out who's point of view you are supposedly hearing from
- heathcliff and Catherine's "love story" only accounts for about half of the book
- it's super depressing and you pretty much hate all the characters
