I'd gotten about 60% through when I first read the book a few years ago (maybe 8-10) on two separate vacations but didn't get to finish the book before returning home. There's a lot I liked about the book and if you take it at face value, away from the musical, it's an interesting story on its own. I appreciate how the story we know has been turned on its head and continues to inspire other adaptations. Maguire really made it his own and the Wizard was so dastardly that it sticks. Truly an evil figure that reminds you of other real-life leaders, past and present. The one thing I could do without is some of the spiritual stuff near the end. I got kind of bored with it, honestly. I am tempted enough to read the sequel, however.
