White Smoke

The Haunting of Hill House meets Get Out in this chilling YA psychological thriller and modern take on the classic haunted house story from New York Times bestselling author Tiffany D. Jackson!

Marigold is running from ghosts. The phantoms of her old life keep haunting her, but a move with her newly blended family from their small California beach town to the embattled Midwestern city of Cedarville might be the fresh start she needs. Her mom has accepted a new job with the Sterling Foundation that comes with a free house, one that Mari now has to share with her bratty ten-year-old stepsister, Piper.

The renovated picture-perfect home on Maple Street, sitting between dilapidated houses, surrounded by wary neighbors has its . . . secrets. That's only half the problem: household items vanish, doors open on their own, lights turn off, shadows walk past rooms, voices can be heard in the walls, and there's a foul smell seeping through the vents only Mari seems to notice. Worse: Piper keeps talking about a friend who wants Mari gone.

But "running from ghosts" is just a metaphor, right?

As the house closes in, Mari learns that the danger isn't limited to Maple Street. Cedarville has its secrets, too. And secrets always find their way through the cracks.

Jแด€แด„แด‹sแดษด โญ ( 4 / 10 ) So Ms. Jackson if you nasty back with another novel under her belt! What what! I gotta lot to say and IG stay stingy with the character count. So lemme jump in Things I dug about this one the dive into gentrification and Devil's night. Makes me want to look more into that and learn more because I feel ignorant and I am not. Sammy was absolutely one of my favorite little kid characters ever and he's not a main character. I also enjoyed little badass (Piper) when we got to the end and yes i don't care that the end i felt for her she was still doing thangs she knew she shouldn't have. She was the epitome of flawed and i loved how she peeled layer on layer all the way through. The actual dive into a blended family and how when mixing a swirl couple sometimes everybody butts heads be it racial outlooks, "my" kid phrases. That always gets glossed over. The story was also great. THE DAMN BEDBUGS!! I swear this book had me itching. I love the "twist" here, because honestly as many people have reported things like this happening that's scary! That seem short? Felt rushed? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ The things i hated. The pacing. Oh my lanta the pace felt so slow and stretched out to get us to what was actually going on, a bunch of unnecessary filler. The narrator of this audible. I disliked this narrator VA so badly it put me off, so I'll be getting the physical or ebook to see if that fixes things for me. Speaking of narrator. The main character, Mari she felt surface to me like the author wanted to dive into her and just kept pulling back at the last minute. As I said earlier the pacing. Went from grandmama on a walker with the tennis balls at the bottom to speedy Gonzales having drank two red bulls. Like the reveal hit and then it was over. I don't know i just want feeling that conclusion it felt very "ok done now!" I feel like this would have been better as a short story versus a full fledge novel because the story was phenomenal, it just needed too much filler on the front end to make it a full book. Love TDJ still this was just not the book i was hoping for. โ„๐•’๐•ก๐•ก๐•ช โ„๐•–๐•’๐••๐•š๐•Ÿ๐•˜ แ’AY MAY OUT!

I was expecting more, this was suspense and not much else, but half way through you can speculate pretty quickly the ending. Also we are kept in suspense for this huge secret to be revealed, the secret that caused the entire family to be uprooted in the first place and it was not the serious, at least not to me. It was good but I wanted more
