Whistling past the graveyard. That’s what Daddy called it when you did something to keep your mind off your most worstest fear...
In the summer of 1963, nine-year-old Starla Claudelle runs away from her strict grandmother’s Mississippi home. Starla’s destination is Nashville, where her mother went to become a famous singer, abandoning Starla when she was three. Walking a lonely country road, Starla accepts a ride from Eula, a black woman traveling alone with a white baby. Now, on the road trip that will change her life forever, Starla sees for the first time life as it really is—as she reaches for a dream of how it could one day be.

Started slow but it really picked up when Starla ran away. Very memorable characters and a well told story. Loved Starla.
Excellent book. Highly recommend!
Good book for a road trip, Starla, the protagonist got to be very annoying very quickly. Too many things were resolved way too fast. Entertaining enough for a long drive
I honestly was not expecting to like this book. But I was dead wrong. Not only does it have several gripping and intense moments, it is a heartfelt, tender and beautiful story about a child who learns what chosen family is in a time when segregation and racism was at its peak. So beautifully written.
This is a great book. I normally would not choose a book like this, but I was intrigued...based on a friend's recommendation. This was a quick read for me, and one that may surprise you. Give it a try!
