Whispers and the Roars

By K Webster

***THIS STANDALONE IS BEST ENJOYED WHEN YOU DON'T READ ANY REVIEWS OR SPOILERS BEFORE READING. GOING IN BLIND IS BEST. TRUST ME.***

From USA Today bestselling author K Webster comes a gripping and emotional psychological romance standalone!

I'm a recluse.
Sad, quiet, afraid.
Sequestered in my home away from the world.
It's better this way.

I wasn't always alone.
I had him-my boyfriend, my best friend, my everything.
Yeo Anderson.
But I sent him away.

I was a fungus. Growing and festering. Turning his brilliant parts black with the disease otherwise known as me.

My sweet boy was sick in love. I couldn't bear to think about what he was giving up. For me. I'd poisoned him, but it wasn't too late. I could fix it. So, I did.

But he's back.
The boy blossomed into a man who wants to fight me for me.

The past that rules me is dark and chaotic and violent.
It always wins.

Love isn't supposed to be a war.
Yeo thinks our hearts, though, will win this time.

Warning: Whispers and the Roars is a dark romance. Strong sexual themes and violence, which could trigger emotional distress, are found in this story. The abuse written in this story is graphic and not glossed over, which could be upsetting to some. This story is NOT for everyone. Proceed with caution.

Whispers and the Roars is a book you really do need to read blind, so I am keeping this review vague on purpose. K. Webster takes a dark psychological romance, adds childhood trauma, obsession, devotion, and a love story that feels like it needs both a therapist and a fire extinguisher. Then, she drops a twist that makes you rethink everything you just read. Kady is a recluse whose life has been shaped by horrific abuse. Yeo Anderson is her childhood love, now a doctor, who returns from med school determined to save the girl he never stopped loving. Their connection is intense, messy, and so codependent that I spent half the book thinking, “That is sweet,” and the other half thinking, “Sir, please call another professional.” Yeo loves Kady deeply, but the amount of her healing placed on his shoulders made me deeply uncomfortable. The fast pacing worked in the book’s favor. It is short, sharp, and strange enough that I never had time to get bored. The trauma is graphic, the romance is complicated, and the psychological elements are dramatic. Kady and Yeo’s ending is sweet. I did appreciate the idea of love surviving something brutal. The recovery arc felt too neat for subject matter this heavy. Whispers and the Roars was interesting, wild, and memorable. Though, it was not my particular dark romance cup of tea. Pick this up if you like dark romance that goes straight for the emotional jugular and does not apologize for being uncomfortable.

You ever watch those horror movies where it's not sure how to get you from one scene to the next and the current scene is so slow you get bored and the next is like a slap in the face of wake the hell up? Thats how this book played out. The calm "whispers" were just so slow and calm that I'd zone out and then something and I'd have to almost double take the scene. Even the lows were enjoyable though. Yes I zoned but it was a good break. I still got all the pieces that needed to be grabbed. If you're wondering why I haven't summarized this book it's because just like K. Webster has stated. The book is best just diving in. Dont read any in depth reviews, or summaries just go into it. Makes it much more enjoyable going in blind. I will say the book is very dark and deals with all kinds of real life horrors. The book was amazing though even with it's lows. They were timed right and broke tensions. It really was a good read and very quick. Pɪᴄᴋ ᴛʜɪs ᴜᴘ ɪғ ʏᴏᴜ ʟɪᴋᴇ: House on Needless Street, The Unrequited, Friends with Monsters, You Should Have Told Me 𝔻𝕒𝕣𝕜 ℝ𝕖𝕒𝕕𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝘑𝘢𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘺 𝘖𝘶𝘵
