Where the Forest Meets the Stars

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post bestseller, and a Goodreads Choice Award finalist.

In this gorgeously stunning debut, a mysterious child teaches two strangers how to love and trust again.

After the loss of her mother and her own battle with breast cancer, Joanna Teale returns to her graduate research on nesting birds in rural Illinois, determined to prove that her recent hardships have not broken her. She throws herself into her work from dusk to dawn, until her solitary routine is disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious child who shows up at her cabin barefoot and covered in bruises.

The girl calls herself Ursa, and she claims to have been sent from the stars to witness five miracles. With concerns about the child's home situation, Jo reluctantly agrees to let her stay--just until she learns more about Ursa's past.

Jo enlists the help of her reclusive neighbor, Gabriel Nash, to solve the mystery of the charming child. But the more time they spend together, the more questions they have. How does a young girl not only read but understand Shakespeare? Why do good things keep happening in her presence? And why aren't Jo and Gabe checking the missing children's website anymore?

Though the three have formed an incredible bond, they know difficult choices must be made. As the summer nears an end and Ursa gets closer to her fifth miracle, her dangerous past closes in. When it finally catches up to them, all of their painful secrets will be forced into the open, and their fates will be left to the stars.

Where the Forest Meets the Stars is an uplifting novel that blends elements of mystery, found family, and healing in a way that kept me engaged from start to finish. A bit slow in the middle, I felt like Ursa’s true origins could’ve been brought into the story earlier. But I really loved the emotional depth of the story and the way it explored resilience and connection through Jo, Gabe, and the mysterious Ursa. The writing was immersive, and the themes of love and second chances made for a truly heartwarming read. That being said, one thing that bothered me was how Jo handled Gabe’s struggles with his mental illness. While I appreciated their dynamic overall, there were moments where she seemed too forceful, not fully considering how he felt or what he needed in those moments. Instead of giving him space to process things on his own terms, she often pushed him too hard, which made their relationship feel a little imbalanced at times. I wish there had been more sensitivity in the way she approached his struggles, as it would have made their bond feel more natural and understanding. Despite that, I still really enjoyed the novel. The themes of hope and healing were strong, and Ursa’s storyline was especially compelling. This book is perfect for readers who enjoy emotional, character-driven stories with a touch of magical realism.

Where to begin with this beautifully haunting story. As a mother, this book truly cut me to the core in many ways. The most important thing to me in a story is believable characters that actually grow throughout the story. This book delivers that amazingly well! All of the choices that Joe is faced with as a young woman, regarding this little star child, Ursa, are so true and real for me that I was engrossed immediately. I love when a character makes the choices I would too! I had an inkling of Ursa’s identity and once the truth was revealed, my heart was cut into pieces. As a foster mother, this story reached into my heart and confirmed for me exactly why I became licensed in the first place. Our job is to love these children and give them a safe place to heal and grow. Joe does that for sweet Ursa who is traumatized beyond belief. This book should be required reading for foster families as it shows the depth that trauma hits and the fracturing of a soul it can cause. It was wrapped up so beautifully at the end, I am very grateful for that!

So adorable! And from the perspectives she tells the story, there are a lot of heavy subjects, but she writes it in a way that flows lightly, with some magic to it. The ending warmed my heart

I picked this up for a book club assignment to read an uplifting book. This certainly fits the bill for that. An enjoyable book that weaves a story of caring, hurts, and healing. With some suspense and action included! Jo is a cancer survivor in a PhD program doing field work when a young barefoot girl stops at the house she is renting for the summer. The girl, Ursa, says she’s an alien from another galaxy inhabiting the body. Is she…I’m still not sure. Please read the book and make your decision.

Very interesting read. Gives a tender but profound perspective of a child experiencing too much life, too soon.
