Where the Forest Meets the Stars

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post bestseller, and a Goodreads Choice Award finalist.

In this gorgeously stunning debut, a mysterious child teaches two strangers how to love and trust again.

After the loss of her mother and her own battle with breast cancer, Joanna Teale returns to her graduate research on nesting birds in rural Illinois, determined to prove that her recent hardships have not broken her. She throws herself into her work from dusk to dawn, until her solitary routine is disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious child who shows up at her cabin barefoot and covered in bruises.

The girl calls herself Ursa, and she claims to have been sent from the stars to witness five miracles. With concerns about the child's home situation, Jo reluctantly agrees to let her stay--just until she learns more about Ursa's past.

Jo enlists the help of her reclusive neighbor, Gabriel Nash, to solve the mystery of the charming child. But the more time they spend together, the more questions they have. How does a young girl not only read but understand Shakespeare? Why do good things keep happening in her presence? And why aren't Jo and Gabe checking the missing children's website anymore?

Though the three have formed an incredible bond, they know difficult choices must be made. As the summer nears an end and Ursa gets closer to her fifth miracle, her dangerous past closes in. When it finally catches up to them, all of their painful secrets will be forced into the open, and their fates will be left to the stars.

Where the Forest Meets the Stars is an uplifting novel that blends elements of mystery, found family, and healing in a way that kept me engaged from start to finish. A bit slow in the middle, I felt like Ursa’s true origins could’ve been brought into the story earlier. But I really loved the emotional depth of the story and the way it explored resilience and connection through Jo, Gabe, and the mysterious Ursa. The writing was immersive, and the themes of love and second chances made for a truly heartwarming read. That being said, one thing that bothered me was how Jo handled Gabe’s struggles with his mental illness. While I appreciated their dynamic overall, there were moments where she seemed too forceful, not fully considering how he felt or what he needed in those moments. Instead of giving him space to process things on his own terms, she often pushed him too hard, which made their relationship feel a little imbalanced at times. I wish there had been more sensitivity in the way she approached his struggles, as it would have made their bond feel more natural and understanding. Despite that, I still really enjoyed the novel. The themes of hope and healing were strong, and Ursa’s storyline was especially compelling. This book is perfect for readers who enjoy emotional, character-driven stories with a touch of magical realism.

I picked this up for a book club assignment to read an uplifting book. This certainly fits the bill for that. An enjoyable book that weaves a story of caring, hurts, and healing. With some suspense and action included! Jo is a cancer survivor in a PhD program doing field work when a young barefoot girl stops at the house she is renting for the summer. The girl, Ursa, says she’s an alien from another galaxy inhabiting the body. Is she…I’m still not sure. Please read the book and make your decision.

The book started out being outside of my regular genre of murder and mayhem- LOL but as the storyline continued it started fitting into it. Jo is a breast cancer survivor, because of her mom's early death due to breast cancer. Ursa is a homeless child 8 years old, intelligent and says she is from a different planet who needs to witness 5 miracles before she can return home. Gabriel has issues and Jo/Ursa (mainly Jo) are instrumental in helping him out with sorting them out. The book uniquely blends these unusual characters together to make something beautiful. Though felt that the end of the book was a little formulaic. Its a feel good book.

Ugh. Boy, this was a poorly developed narrative. I can't imagine why people give this book 5 stars. I had 40 pages left and dropped it. It felt clipped, rushed, underdeveloped, and formulaic.
Mind you, the story starts out intriguing enough with a barefooted girl found lost in the woods who says she is an alien. In comes Jo, the main character, who is very unlikeable with a host of mental conflict. She meets a handsome egg seller, who happens to live right nextdoor, who has a host of mental health issues. But in the end, they both overcome their flaws with their relationship made in quark heaven. NEXT!
