Where the Forest Meets the Stars

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post bestseller, and a Goodreads Choice Award finalist.

In this gorgeously stunning debut, a mysterious child teaches two strangers how to love and trust again.

After the loss of her mother and her own battle with breast cancer, Joanna Teale returns to her graduate research on nesting birds in rural Illinois, determined to prove that her recent hardships have not broken her. She throws herself into her work from dusk to dawn, until her solitary routine is disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious child who shows up at her cabin barefoot and covered in bruises.

The girl calls herself Ursa, and she claims to have been sent from the stars to witness five miracles. With concerns about the child's home situation, Jo reluctantly agrees to let her stay--just until she learns more about Ursa's past.

Jo enlists the help of her reclusive neighbor, Gabriel Nash, to solve the mystery of the charming child. But the more time they spend together, the more questions they have. How does a young girl not only read but understand Shakespeare? Why do good things keep happening in her presence? And why aren't Jo and Gabe checking the missing children's website anymore?

Though the three have formed an incredible bond, they know difficult choices must be made. As the summer nears an end and Ursa gets closer to her fifth miracle, her dangerous past closes in. When it finally catches up to them, all of their painful secrets will be forced into the open, and their fates will be left to the stars.

Very interesting read. Gives a tender but profound perspective of a child experiencing too much life, too soon.

Wish I could get that time back.

Don't do it.

This is one of the most absurd books that I've read in a long time. The writing is so flat! It didn't get me to feel anything at all through the whole book.

And there's a lot going on in this book:
-mother's death
-breast cancer survivor
-alien
-illicit love affair
-murder
-rat x boyfriend/fling
-love story

None of these significant themes are explored in any depth or have any resolutions. The story is stupid and I honestly cannot think of one redeeming quality of this book.

Wonderful story with well developed and likeable characters. I really enjoyed the back stories for the three main characters: Jo, Gabe and Ursa. Even the secondary characters had really interesting stories that helped flesh things out. There are elements of mystery, romance, family drama, thriller, and maybe sci fi đŸ‘½. There were unanswered questions throughout which kept me wondering until everything was revealed in the end. I really liked Where the Forest Meets the Stars.

A beautiful story that warms the soul. You'll find yourself smiling and crying all in the same moment.

Jo is trying to reclaim her life after twin catastrophes and does so while completing a research project in the field. The field site brings some challenges and joys. Soon after she begins the work, Jo meets a runaway girl, who claims to be an alien come down to earth to find 5 miracles. Jo searches missing children databases and calls the sheriff to report the found child (who promptly runs away) and there is no record of her anywhere. Ursa proves to be a smart child, compliant and curious, but unwilling to share any information about where she came from. Jo lets her stay. They meet the 'egg man' down the road, who is a brilliant English scholar caring for his mother as he recovers from a mental breakdown and a trio is born. The love these three create for one another is poignant and true, and helps them weather some difficult situations that follow. I really enjoyed the relationships built in this book and reading about field research was heartening (go -STEM!).
