When We Make It: A Nuyorican Novel

Sarai is a first-generation Puerto Rican question asker who can see with clarity the truth, pain, and beauty of the world both inside and outside her Bushwick apartment. Together with her older sister, Estrella, she navigates the strain of family traumas and the systemic pressures of toxic masculinity and housing insecurity in a rapidly gentrifying Brooklyn. Sarai questions the society around her, her Boricua identity, and the life she lives with determination and an open heart, learning to celebrate herself in a way that she has long been denied.

I’ll admit, the writing style threw me for a loop at first—it was like meeting a new friend who talks a little differently than I’m used to. But once I caught the rhythm, I didn't want to leave! It ended up being the perfect time machine, sparking some really beautiful memories I hadn't thought about in years. It’s funny how a book can start off feeling like a puzzle and end up feeling like home.
I devoured this in 2 sittings! Elisabet’s poetry is addicting and accurately depicts the unfortunes of diasporicans in a captivating way that’s like watching any Rosie Perez movie. I can reread this forever.
