The book was not as good as the tv show, sadly. While there were many parts that shocked me that one cannot read in the pages of this story, I felt that the author rambled on and the book itself couldâve been a lot shorter. The tv show DOES follow the book pretty closely, though.
This is a truly extraordinary novel, extraordinary because the stories of survival among the members of the Kurc family are so incredible.
The author clearly did enormous and painstaking research on her family's roots and the footprints they left not only in their hometown of Radom, Poland, but through their forced exiles and wanderings in Warsaw, Paris, Lodz, and even South America. Her depictions of the 5 adult Kurc siblings: Addy, Halina, Genek, Jacob, and Mila are memorable and well distinguished. Their efforts to survive, their ongoing yearning and worry over the family members from whom they were forcibly separated, is moving, and her depictions of the war's violence and atrocities are real while sparing the reader excessively brutal descriptions.
This book was a real page-turner, though I don't recommend reading it late at night. . . you may have a few troubled dreams.
A truly outstanding work, and its foundation in truth makes it that much more incredible.

Wanted to read this before I started the Hulu series, so I’m looking forward to see the comparison! A saga of bravery, strength, destruction, and never-ending hope. WWII novels always make me emotional and this one was nothing short of that same emotional rollercoaster. Remarkable story, based on the true events of the author’s family.
