I liked the first book a lot more than this one. It still has all the good stuff from the first: gritty, direct, and oddly addictive, but it misses the core that held that book together. The first novel really dug into ideas around morality, moral standards, and what it means to be human. That depth is mostly absent here, and the story feels a little hollow because of it.
Leah is still an interesting protagonist and, in fact, becomes more empathetic this time around. Liam works well alongside her and complements that shift nicely. That said, and without getting into spoilers, parts of the plot spiral a bit too far and grow so big that they start to feel unrealistic. It’s a fast-paced thriller that keeps you hooked just long enough, only to land on a somewhat underwhelming ending. I’m hoping the final installment manages to make up for it.
Such a great ending!!!
