Wait Till Helen Comes: A Ghost Story

Beware of Helen...

Heather is such a whiny little brat. Always getting Michael and me into trouble. But since our mother married her father, we're stuck with her...our "poor stepsister" who lost her real mother in a mysterious fire.

But now something terrible has happened. Heather has found a new friend, out in the graveyard behind our home -- a girl named Helen who died with her family in a mysterious fire over a hundred years ago. Now her ghost returns to lure children into the pond...to drown! I don't want to believe in ghosts, but I've followed Heather into the graveyard and watch her talk to Helen. And I'm terrified. Not for myself, but for Heather...

Even as a child, I have never really been a fan of middle-grade novels. This one is no different. I usually try to give them a chance every once in awhile, but they tend to come up short of my expectations.
My main problem with this book were the characters. I didn't really like any of them and the stepdad was a jerk. Albeit my negative feelings toward the stepdad could have stemmed from my own bad experiences with my own.
Overall it was just very anti-climactic and it took me a few days to read this novel, which was in large print and only 185 pages.
In its defense, this book was written in the 80s, so for back then, this could've been a revolutionary story. It was just lacking any kind of originality and the scary-factor fell very short.

This would be a great intro to this genre for a YA if they have any interest in suspense novels. I am an adult, but enjoyed this quick read.

Enjoyable if formulaic novel from Mary Downing Hahn. She certainly knows how to bring the chills.

This time, a young girl named Molly is forced to move into an old church out in the country with her mother, brother, and new stepfather and stepsister. But right from the beginning, there is something unsettling about the move. It might be the old graveyard in their backyard. It might be her stepsister's new fascination -- a small grave with the initials H.E.H., just like her stepsister Heather's. it might be the old, ruined house hidden away in the forest. Whatever it is, Heather is becoming increasingly hateful, and keeps threatening her new stepsiblings that they will pay. Once Helen comes.

This book is much like many of Hahn's other works: a ghost with a sad story, misunderstood children, a terrible secret. But this doesn't make it any less entertaining.

A good read for someone who likes a good chill but also likes to sleep at night.
