Violet Made of Thorns

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A darkly enchanting fantasy about a lying witch, a cursed prince, and a sinister prophecy that ignites their doomed destinies—perfect for fans of The Cruel Prince.
“Everything you want from an enemies-to-lovers fantasy starring morally gray characters.”—BuzzFeed
Violet is a prophet and a liar, influencing the royal court with her cleverly phrased—and not always true—divinations. Honesty is for suckers, like the oh-so-not charming Prince Cyrus, who plans to strip Violet of her official role once he’s crowned at the end of the summer—unless Violet does something about it.
But when the king asks her to falsely prophesy Cyrus's love story for an upcoming ball, Violet awakens a dreaded curse, one that will end in either damnation or salvation for the kingdom—all depending on the prince’s choice of future bride. Violet faces her own choice: Seize an opportunity to gain control of her own destiny, no matter the cost, or give in to the ill-fated attraction that’s growing between her and Cyrus.
Violet’s wits may protect her in the cutthroat court, but they can't change her fate. And as the boundary between hatred and love grows ever thinner with the prince, Violet must untangle a wicked web of deceit in order to save herself and the kingdom—or doom them all.

I picked this up for a quick fiction read in between memoirs and non-fiction. It has great readability for a wide audience. I enjoyed the interesting storyline but didn't particularly care for the heroine's personality, she's a bit mean. I feel like the multifaceted nature of people can be shown through fiction without making them a self-absorbed and unconscionable villain. I feel like this book would have been absolutely amazing with some more world-building. If you like fantasy fiction with a little bit of enemies to lovers trope thrown in you'll enjoy this book. I hear the next in the series is coming out this year.
This was so beautifully written, and Violet was the perfect anti-heroine. With some parallels to some of our favorite fairytales, this book PULLED me in. I hope Gina Chen continues Violet’s story because I still have so many questions.
It was alright, pretty similar to The Cruel Prince fundamentally so it was nice reading this after finishing that series. 🥲
Wow! This was such a great mashup of fairy tales. I really enjoyed the setting and I totally got Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and even some Sleeping Beauty vibes. It’s definitely a dark fantasy with an unlikeable main character.
Violet is not the most likeable and often times very cold throughout the book. I felt her circumstances definitely played into her coldness and that in order for her to survive at court she can’t let anyone into her heart. This way of thinking gets messy when it comes to her and Cyrus’s relationship.
Cyrus was a bit pushy in the romance department for me. I did struggle with their connection and I feel like they’re definitely better allies if they can get away from whatever romantic feelings they have for each other.
This was a fast-paced YA fantasy and I am very interested to see how the next book in the series goes! That ending was definitely not what I was very unexpected and I’m totally here for it!
