this book poses an important contribution to the conversation of climate change, human influence, and the role of geoengineering. i myself am always torn on this issue, especially regarding the overall ethics of humanity's role in tech and the natural world. some sections were really interesting but others were methods i either already knew about or are already widely known. also felt there were too many personal details in the book. preferred kolbert's work in the sixth extinction over this one, but still glad i read this one.
A book about "people trying to solve problems created by people trying to solve problems," Under a White Sky chronicles multiple efforts of engineers and scientists to fend off environmental hazards and climate change. Kolbert does an exceptional job of painting a compelling picture of the conundrum we find ourselves in: altering the nature we've already dramatically altered is likely our only hope and quite possibly the source of future catastrophes still unknown. She is treasure of a writer who has mastered the use of story to distill the science.
