From New York Times bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson

High school senior Tyler Miller used to be the kind of guy who faded into the background. But since he got busted for doing graffiti on the school, and spent the summer doing outdoor work to pay for it, he stands out like you wouldn't believe. His new physique attracts the attention of queen bee Bethany Milbury, who just so happens to be his father's boss's daughter, the sister of his biggest enemy, and Tyler's secret crush. And that sets off a string of events and changes that have Tyler questioning his place in school, in his family, and in the world.

"Poignant and gripping." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"Once again, Anderson's taut, confident writing will cause this story to linger long after the books is set down." —SLJ

The first time I read this book… which was back in like maybe high school this book I thought was good. Now that I’ve read the book again it wasn’t as good as I remember it being. It was an alright book.

This is a coming of age story that's good for older teens. There's suicide, sexual content, abuse and self loathing. It was incredible and I'll admit it: the last two chapters made me cry as I read. This is my first book by this author. I'm very curious to read Speak.

Next book.

For me, this book is very much a product of its time (2007), and I think it would be a much different book today (2019).

It attempts to address toxic masculinity, sort of, and abusive/unhealthy dynamics between different groups of people, as well as the difficulty of feeling like your life is over before it's begun.

I wish I could read the 2019 version. If you know of one such book, please direct me to it.

Laurie Halse Anderson is still brilliant.

Anderson has done it again. Excellent story dealing with important issues. Coming of age in a hostile suburban world. Teen hostility. Angst. Family disfunction.
