Read for a book group and really enjoyed thinking about the implications of being able to have limited "do overs"! Premise gets a bit far fetched at the end, but overall a good story.
Mitch Albom is a joy to read. Grateful for another solid book to enjoy reading.
A fun story to read.
When Alfie Logan is eight years old, he discovers he has an extraordinary gift: the ability to relive any moment in his life and make a different choice. As he grows up, Alfie uses this power to erase mistakes, avoid embarrassment, and even flirt with danger—secure in the knowledge that he can always undo the consequences. As an adult, he turns his gift toward love, carefully refining himself through second chances until he meets Gianna, the woman he believes is his soulmate. But Alfie soon learns the one irreversible rule of his power: once he undoes a love, that person can never love him again. Faced with temptation and the risk of losing everything he’s built, Alfie makes a life-altering choice. Years later, as an aging Alfie is interrogated for an impossible casino win, his remarkable story unfolds, revealing a poignant exploration of love, regret, and the true cost of second chances.
This was such a good read. The characters are well-rounded and emotionally engaging—you truly care about what happens to them. Told from Alfie’s point of view, shifting between the present and the pivotal choices of his past, the story is utterly enthralling. It’s the kind of book you don’t want to put down.
Albom’s storytelling shines in this time-bending love story. While it isn’t his typical overtly religious novel, there is still a strong sense of faith and reflection woven throughout. The story is captivating, emotionally engaging, and deeply thought-provoking. It naturally leads you to ask yourself: What would you do if you had a do-over? What would you risk changing?
That said, there are a few notable plot holes that are never fully addressed, which occasionally pulled me out of the story. Still, the emotional impact largely outweighs these flaws.
The novel also touches lightly on heavier themes such as child loss, sexual assault, and racism, handled with sensitivity.
Overall: 4Âľ stars. Highly recommend
