Toxic: A Dark Romance

By Nicole Blanchard

The Joker meets Haunting Adeline in this dark, forbidden romance where a prison nurse is caught in a dangerous web of obsession with her ruthless psychopath patient.

My life has been a series of bad decisions.

Marrying an abusive man was the first... but falling for a dangerous inmate where I'm a nurse may be the worst.

He's brutal, heartless, and twisted.

But he's also the only one to notice the bruises on my skin.

His forbidden touch becomes my addiction.

His drugging kisses my obsession.

After I learn the truth about why he's in prison, I try to escape, but he finds me.

Now I'm his prisoner.

Toxic is a standalone dark romance featuring a pierced, morally gray antihero with Joker energy, obsessive "Touch Her & Die" protectiveness, and a dangerous cat-and-mouse dynamic with the prison nurse he refuses to let go. It contains explicit sexual content and a full list of trigger warnings can be found at the beginning of the book.

"Intense, filthy, suspenseful--Nicole Blanchard delivers all the goods in this addictive forbidden love story! I absolutely loved this book!" - USA Today bestselling author K Webster

At its core, this story follows Tessa, a woman already trapped in a volatile, unhealthy relationship that creates a deeply unstable home life. That emotional instability becomes the perfect breeding ground for vulnerability, and the moment she crosses paths with a prisoner she’s assigned to help, everything begins to unravel. What starts as temptation quickly escalates into something far darker and far more consuming. This book is a wild ride. The tension builds steadily, pulling you into a web of deception, manipulation, and ultimately, violence. The stakes keep rising, and just when you think you understand where things are going, the story twists again. It’s intense, messy, and at times uncomfortable, but that’s exactly what makes it so gripping. What really stood out to me was how the story forces you to confront the blurred line between love and lust. This isn’t a romance you root for, it’s one you question. It challenges you to think about what “love” looks like when it’s rooted in trauma, control, and emotional desperation. If you’re looking for something clean and feel good, this isn’t it. But if you want a psychological, toxic love story that keeps you hooked and slightly unsettled the entire time, Toxic is your book.

I just finished Toxic by Nicole Blanchard, and overall, I have pretty mixed feelings. The story follows Tessa, a nurse practitioner working in a prison, and Gracin “King,” a hired hitman who’s incarcerated—but we don’t initially know why. While inside, he’s given a job to take someone out and eventually escape. Along the way, he becomes fixated on Tessa, who is trapped in a deeply abusive marriage with the prison warden. Their connection builds in secret, with Gracin sketching her and becoming almost obsessed with her. There’s a lot I really enjoyed here. The pacing is quick, the prison setting adds tension, and the writing itself is engaging. It’s an easy, fast read for a standalone under 400 pages. The dynamic between Tessa and Gracin is intense, and I liked the darker tone overall. That said, I was left wanting more—specifically in the details. There were quite a few plot holes or missing pieces that pulled me out of the story: - His background (like where his artistic talent comes from) isn’t explored. He doesn’t mention why he drew her or left her drawing - His escape and the logistics around it felt rushed and underdeveloped. - Certain moments—like what he says to Tessa’s coworker—are glossed over. - The aftermath of Tessa killing her husband and fleeing felt unrealistic, especially considering Gracin is supposed to be this highly skilled, careful contractor (yet leaves evidence behind). - I also had questions about what happens next—her move to LA, his people finding her, and even small things like the apartment situation. - Also I feel like there was no depth with the FMC as to her gaining her strength. Like he played the wedding video to make her rage so she could see she’s a killer too when she needs to be?! Maybe I’ve been spoiled with other writers so I wanted more. There’s a scene toward the end that is very bold and definitely leans into the darker romance vibe, which I know some readers will love. For me, it fit the tone, but again, I just wish the surrounding plot had been tightened up to match the intensity. It fell flat. As for the spice: it’s explicit, but fairly limited—only a handful of scenes. Overall, I think this had a strong concept and a compelling atmosphere, but it needed a bit more depth and closure to really hit. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t fully connect because of the unanswered questions.

Honestly, the plot was there, but it was POORLY executed. Felt kind of like 5 books jammed into one that just kept the same character names.
