Time Regained: In Search of Lost Time, Vol. VI (Modern Library Classics)

Time Regained, the final volume of In Search of Lost Time, begins in the bleak and uncertain years of World War I. Years later, after the war’s end, Proust’s narrator returns to Paris and reflects on time, reality, jealousy, artistic creation, and the raw material of literature—his past life. This Modern Library edition also includes the indispensable Guide to Proust, compiled by Terence Kilmartin and revised by Joanna Kilmartin.

For this authoritative English-language edition, D. J. Enright has revised the late Terence Kilmartin’s acclaimed reworking of C. K. Scott Moncrieff’s translation to take into account the new definitive French editions of Á la recherché du temps perdu (the final volume of these new editions was published by the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade in 1989).

The dramatization was well done and interesting though the volume normalization could be improved. While the story was interesting, I found it to be quite depressing. Had I read the book, I may have enjoyed it more if it has better character development. I saw the book title on a list of 20 Greatest Tomes and was interested in it, but didn't want to commit the required time to reading it. I'm glad I listened to the dramatization though I realize at such a condensed level, it couldn't deliver the full power of the of full work (or so I imagine, given the high praise for this author). At least now I can say I've experienced a little taste of Proust.

Oh, this book. I’ve started it so many times over the past 20 years. Every time, it begins the same way: I am blown away by the language, the imagery, the craft. I am swooning and my heart is racing. I plow through the first several chapters in near-ecstasy.

Every time, I set it aside at some point and don’t pick it up again. Despite my awe, I just can’t ever get emotionally invested enough in the story. And yet, that AWE. It’s a shimmering, breath-taking thing, worth 4 stars in and of itself.
