These Silent Woods

A father and daughter living in the remote Appalachian mountains must reckon with the ghosts of their past in Kimi Cunningham Grant's These Silent Woods, a mesmerizing novel of suspense.

No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world.

For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her—and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

The only people who know they exist are a mysterious local hermit named Scotland, and Cooper's old friend, Jake, who visits each winter to bring them food and supplies. But this year, Jake doesn't show up, setting off an irreversible chain of events that reveals just how precarious their situation really is. Suddenly, the boundaries of their safe haven have blurred—and when a stranger wanders into their woods, Finch’s growing obsession with her could put them all in danger. After a shocking disappearance threatens to upend the only life Finch has ever known, Cooper is forced to decide whether to keep hiding—or finally face the sins of his past.

Vividly atmospheric and masterfully tense, These Silent Woods is a poignant story of survival, sacrifice, and how far a father will go when faced with losing it all.

A man makes a series of poor decisions, which is presented as love and fatherly devotion, but is, at its core, proof that he was not fit to take care of the child. The pacing is slow and this story can in no way actually be considered a thriller. A book would need to thrill. The ending is...convenient, in addition to boring.

Could not put this book down! The author does a fantastic job of keeping you guessing. I can’t say there were really any dull or dragging points in the book. It gets a bit heartbreaking toward the end but then comes back a bit to give you some comfort on how it all goes down. All in all, such a great story and very well written!

I loved this story, as the oldest daughter and a true daddys girl this story hit home. I loved the characters and they setting. It was such a wholesome read and a beautiful storybook ending.

Well, I thought I was going to like this a lot more, especially since I read it while on vacation while in the mountains. It is not a thriller. It is a very slow burn with little suspense. I thought it was predictable. Coopper has raised his daughter Finch in the Appalachian mountains in a remote cabin for the last 8 years. We slowly get the backstory of what happened and how they ended up in Copper's friend's family's off-grid cabin. I liked the relationship between Copper and Finch but at the same time, it was also very selfish of him to think this way of life would be sustainable. Once a year, his old military friend, Jake brings him food and supplies. One year he doesn't show up. Cooper knows he has to venture into town but he is wary of being discovered. He already has a nosy "neighbor", Scotland, who actually knows the truth about him. Finch becomes obsessed when a young woman wanders onto their property but could she threaten to put them all in danger? I really liked Scotland's character. The whole story just seemed a bit off for me and the ending was not believable.
