What a fantastic spin on the witch trope in cozy mysteries.
Andie and Dessie are lost in their own lives, both following mysteries evolving the other without realizing how their paths intertwine. This read starts out in a vision and the rollercoaster of emotions doesn't let up until the end.
For Andie's part, she has spent so much time running from her calling, when she is forced to solve the mystery, she had to handle a lot of personal growth about herself and her community along the way. This is so well written, the personalities of the other woman in her club left me wanting to get to know them all better. The world is unique, and I loved exploring the aspects of magic.
Dessie has been at a standstill for ten years. Her life is on pause, and she needs answers before she can put the loss of her husband to rest. The desperation is so powerful throughout her character. Each scene you are left wanting to be screaming at these people with her. Feeling like they never did enough to find him, and using it to fuel her every choice. It makes the ending so impactful. While she was abrasive, there was no way not to root for her.
While I am left with questions, they are all regarding the world build and wanting so much more of the community. Every string that is opened for both mysteries is wrapped up nicely with final revivals worth bingeing for. All of the characters play a part, and I secretly want to see more of Dessie and Declan's interactions. Was that a spark?
You can't have a book about Scotland without mentioning the scenery. You can definitely tell that the author has been to these places, they are magically described, from sunrises to landscape. It left me wanting to plan a trip to a nice little BnB, maybe not one where people go missing though.
If you love witchy cozy mysteries with not your usual variety plots, and strong willed female characters, you're going to adore this book.
