The Watchmaker's Daughter (Glass and Steele)

India Steele is desperate. Her father is dead, her fiancé took her inheritance, and no one will employ her, despite years working for her watchmaker father. Indeed, the other London watchmakers seem frightened of her. Alone, poor, and at the end of her tether, India takes employment with the only person who'll accept her - an enigmatic and mysterious man from America. A man who possesses a strange watch that rejuvenates him when he's ill.

Matthew Glass must find a particular watchmaker, but he won't tell India why any old one won't do. Nor will he tell her what he does back home, and how he can afford to stay in a house in one of London's best streets. So when she reads about an American outlaw known as the Dark Rider arriving in England, she suspects Mr. Glass is the fugitive. When danger comes to their door, she's certain of it. But if she notifies the authorities, she'll find herself unemployed and homeless again - and she will have betrayed the man who saved her life.

With a cast of quirky characters, an intriguing mystery, and a dash of romance, THE WATCHMAKER'S DAUGHTER is the start of a thrilling new historical fantasy series from the author of the bestselling Ministry of Curiosities, Freak House, and Emily Chambers Spirit Medium books.

Engaging historical fiction set in late Victorian England with an element of fantasy. India Steeele is the title's watchmaker's daughter who has been cheated out of her dead father's business by her ex-fiance. The story starts with her confronting the cad who did her wrong. She meets an American, Matthew Glass, who is looking for a particular watchmaker. They join together to look for Chronos, the mysterious watchmaker. I liked that the fantasy element was a small part of the story. There is more mystery, romance, and adventure than magic. Reminded me of the PBS show "Miss Scarlet and the Duke" with a strong female trying to make her way in a patriarchy, Mr. Glass is even stoic like the Duke. An enjoyable read, I look forward to trying more in the series.

Awesome start to a series. Can’t wait to get the next one to find out what happens to Matt and India. We all know I love a book filled with low key magic

Not sure what made me pick to read this book next on my tablet, but this book had me hooked right away, and I ended up reading until way past my bedtime to finish it all in one setting. It has been quite some time since I got so captivated so quickly.

I found the premise unique, and the 2 main characters rather delightful. I had no idea there were so many books in the series however; but it give me hope that the author will continue to develop the characters and introduce fresh faces in future volumes. I'm excited to start book #2.
