The Truths We Hold: An American Journey

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In her acclaimed memoir, former Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris delivers “a life story that genuinely entrances” (Los Angeles Times) as she looks back on how she was shaped by the core truths that unite us.
“An engaging read that provides insights into the influences of [Harris’s] life—most of all, her mother Shyamala Gopalan Harris, Ph.D., a breast cancer researcher . . . Revealing and even endearing.” —San Francisco Chronicle
The daughter of immigrants and civil rights activists, Vice President Kamala Harris was raised in an Oakland, California, community that cared deeply about social justice. As she rose to prominence as one of the political leaders of our time, her experiences would become her guiding light as she grappled with an array of complex issues and learned to bring a voice to the voiceless.
In The Truths We Hold, she reckons with the big challenges we face together. Drawing on the hard-won wisdom and insight from her own career and the work of those who have most inspired her, she communicates a vision of shared struggle, shared purpose, and shared values as we confront the great work of our day.

I love how personalble her memoir is; this book doesn't just explore her campaign ideals, it never wavers, even post-2024 election. Her willingness to share her journey from the time she grew up in Oakland, up until becoming a Senator, and now a (former) Vice-president, is nothing short of earth-grounding.
Everything I'd seen of Kamala Harris left me impressed and happy that she's an elected official but I didn't know much about her background or what her stances on issues were. After listening to her memoir (which could double as a huge campaign speech) - I'm sold.
It felt great to listen to her talk about her family, her career, and her beliefs which mirror many of my own. How nice to hear from a patriotic public servant who believes in helping make our country better for everyone.
My only complaint about the audio book is that she's not always the best narrator... But I don't think it would have been as effective for me if anyone else read it.

I listened to the audio. Very political. I was hoping for more of a tell-all and more about her and not so much the political side of her. Similar to Michelle Obama’s Becoming was my expectation. It was still good and I learned a lot about her political background. Just wanted more. The book was read by her.
I was walking through B&N and happened to see this. Even though it's a 2019 book, I figure it's a good idea to know the thoughts and more background about the woman whom I'm going to be voting for. (And yes, I read a biography of Trump in the past, and it rightly horrifies me that people think he's in favor of the average American citizen since he seems to have a past of cheating them.). My impression of her is that she was a prosecutor who was looking for justice, not just a conviction rate. I love that she began Back on Track, that she cares about poverty and recidivism and how to better lives. I love that she really did something about the mortgage crisis. She does care deeply about Dreamers and racial disparities and the effect of pollution on people's lives. And she's put a lot of thought into cybersecurity, which so many politicians don't seem to understand the importance of.
I was thrilled with her candidacy when Biden stepped down, and after reading her book, I'm even more excited.

I really got to know who she is and what she stands for. She has a heart for the disadvantage.
