The Toll (3) (Arc of a Scythe)

“A furiously paced finale that reaches for the stars.” —Kirkus Reviews
“Gripping.” —School Library Journal (starred review)
“Stellar.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)
In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times bestselling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created?
Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him?
The answer lies in the Tone, the Toll, and the Thunder.

OOF TEARS! Tears streaming down my silly little face.
9.5/10 bc Im petty abt my favorite character not getting a lot of attention bc he’s sad.
Wow. I should have figured it out by now but Shusterman loves shoving a million insane things into the very end of his books. That was a lot of emotions.
I devoured this book. This whole series actually. I loved the the characters so much. I was explaining to Marillah (ty for recommending) that the first book focused on morals, the second was more setup and then The Toll was really focused on emotions and the emotional repercussions. Lots of very emotional moments and characters. You really feel for every one of the characters introduced, even the new ones (shout out Jeri! Awesome character).
I always doubted the Thunderhead but it really became a HUGE character in this one. It felt just as emotional as the human characters which is such an interesting take. I think the Thunderhead might actually have become one of my favorite characters.
Another surprising character who grew on me was Constantine. He ended up being cool.
I was screaming throughout this book because a lot of terrible things happened and I really didn’t know how they were gonna get out of a lot of the situations the characters were put in. Things worked out ig? Little bit devastated. I have so many thoughts abt the ending. I think it was done really well despite the tragedy. I do need some epilogue tho, I’m dying.
ALSO MY FAVORITE PLANET SYSTEM WAS MENTIONED!! TRAPPIST-1 FTW!!!!
Wow! What an excellent series! I was shocked by all the twists and turns! My one complaint is the book moving all over the place from different times, here to there. Other than that, it was great!
Absolutely brilliant! The first half of the book has each chapter taking place in different perspectives and different points in time. Watching it all come together was like a great Marvel universe cross over! And with 40 pages to go, I was shocked and impressed at how everything tied together so well! I'm just in love with this series!
