The Temporary Gentleman by Sebastian Barry
307 pages
What’s it about?
Jack McNulty is an Irishmen who looks back at his life in this poetic novel.
What did it make me think about?
It made me think of how often alcohol and regret are found together.
Should I read it?
I think Sebastian Barry may be one of the most gifted writers alive today. His novels are pure poetry. I would read anything he wrote. This was not my favorite one of his books but I enjoyed it.
Quote-
“My heart though, my heart is broken. I know it is. For Nearly four years I have laboured through life with this broken heart, but it gets worse and worse, like an engine with a neglected fault that weakens all the other parts. Now I must try to men it, I must. I must go back over everything and find the places where it broke and ask the god of good things to mend me, if that is possible.
Question-
What caused the relationship between Jack and Mai to deteriorate?
If you like this try-
Transatlantic by Colum McCann
Levels of Life by Julian Barnes
