The Summer We Buried: A Novel

An unthinkable crime—and the tattered threads of a friendship gone wrong—come roaring back to terrible new life in Jody Gehrman’s riveting psychological suspense, perfect for fans of Joshilyn Jackson.

Twenty years ago, Tansy was drawn to Selene’s hard edges, her grit, and her knack for survival. Since then, the confused tangle of guilt about covering up a murder shattered their friendship, and even now, at thirty-eight, Tansy has never come to terms with what happened that night.

But now, Selene is back, demanding her old friend repay her. Selene’s daughter, Jupiter, attends the college where Tansy works as a guidance counselor. Selene is convinced that Jupiter’s boyfriend, Colton, is abusive, and wants Tansy to intervene. As she is drawn back into the intensity of Selene’s world, Tansy discovers the ugly truth about Colton. But Tansy suspects there’s far more to the story, and now she’ll finally have to confront Selene once and for all.

It was okay. Okay story line and a good twist. Had the potential to be more but there were a couple of non essential characters and stories which were annoying. 6/10.

What would you do to overcome your past? Tansy and Selene were best friends yet after a horrible situation Tansy is forced to make decision to break away from Selene and heal on her own. In the meantime, Selene comes out of nowhere asking for help for her daughter and makes things worse for Tansy. She should have run as soon as that woman showed up! She should have turned her in when Selene broke into her house. There are so many things Tansy should have done. Tansy's self-preservation kicked in and I get it, but she supposedly had a moral code which told her what needed to be done. Common sense failed all of these characters! It made me so angry when Tansy said: "I don't want to be the one in flames when she douses my world with gasoline and lights the match" (44). Uhm too late there Tansy...the past happened, and the current situation is happening now, so you are already on fire. She might have tried to cover the flames, but Tansy failed. The best line Selene ever said was: "I haven't made any demands. All I made was nachos" (134) I may not like that bitch, but that line was priceless! I do not necessarily regret two particular scenes because I felt it was justified, but it was still wrong! Everyone except Jupiter irritated me so much. Not a lot of the book made sense because although one situation is what started everything, all the situations tied together in one big bow and were wrapped up, gifted to the reader nicely. The author tried ridiculously hard to give the readers a good ending when the book itself was centered in crazy town and they failed. I read this for one of my book clubs, and while it had its charms, I'm not sure I would recommend it because there is too much that made no sense and wasn't very realistic. I understand fiction isn't about being realistic, but I mean it was to the point it was unbelievable. So, if you decide to read this, good luck and god speed.
