This story is a parody of multiple commonly known fairy tales. It takes what everyone knows and just changes it enough that it is comedic and fun to read. It includes parodies of stories such as: The Little Red Hen, The Gingerbread Man, Red Riding Hood, and many more.
The author and illustrator work together to interrelate their crafts. Most of the text is not just standing alone, it is incorporated into the overall image. The author also uses the technique of interruption by the Red Hen to make the reader feel like they are more a part of the story. There are also multiple, open ended plots.
The illustrations in this are very interesting. They are just grim enough that you can tell just by looking at a couple pages that the stories are probably postmodern, but they are not drawn too cruelly. I feel like older children will enjoy this story more because they most likely grew up hearing the normal fairy tales and will appreciate the twist on the original tales.
