Wow, this had me hooked from page one. Creepy, tense, well thought out, and hard to put down!

The Staircase in the Woods is a gripping tale that kept me hooked. It follows a dual timeline about five friends on a camping trip, where only four returned after encountering a mysterious staircase. Twenty years later, the remaining friends reunite to find their missing companion. The book is reminiscent of It, yet it stands out with its eerie atmosphere and vivid details. Themes of friendship, abandonment, and guilt are explored brilliantly. The tension and sense of danger throughout made it hard to put down, and the ending was unforgettable.

I really enjoyed reading The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig. The book combines horror, mystery, and emotional storytelling in a way that kept me hooked from beginning to end. The story follows a group of childhood friends who are haunted by the disappearance of their friend Matty after he climbed a mysterious staircase in the woods and vanished. Twenty years later, they return to the staircase to finally learn what happened to him. One of the things I liked most was how the novel focused on the characters’ trauma and guilt. As the friends enter the strange house beyond the staircase, they are forced to confront painful memories and secrets from their past. The house itself was one of the creepiest parts of the book because it seemed alive and fed on fear and suffering. The biggest surprise for me was learning that the house was manipulating the characters and using their trauma against them. I also found the reveal about Matty interesting. Instead of a simple rescue story, the book becomes a much deeper exploration of friendship, regret, and survival. The ending was unsettling and left some questions unanswered, but I thought that made the story even more memorable. A quote that stood out to me was: “Friendship is like a house.” This idea appears throughout the novel and reflects how the characters’ relationships contain both comfort and pain. Overall, I would rate The Staircase in the Woods 4.5 out of 5 stars. It was creepy, emotional, and thought-provoking. I would recommend it to readers who enjoy horror stories that focus as much on the characters as they do on the scares.

Definitely my least favourite of his offerings

2.5 stars rounded up.

This is very reminiscent of dark matter meets hollow places. I think the book blurb is somewhat misleading.

Wouldn’t have purchased this simply because its not my kind of horror book.

It’s definitely very sci fi; really didn’t love the explanation and how they came to that conclusion (felt rushed) and not as resolved as his previous books.

Hard to detail without spoilers.

Hard to follow up Black River Orchard, took me a bit to get into it but the plot was propulsive enough to keep me going and I was able to buy in by the end.
